Huge movie, no lasting impact

It's been 10 years since Avatar. It moved 3D way forward, but the movie itself seems pretty much irrelevant by now. Compared to other non-sequeled flicks, the impact of Avatar looks like a dud.

Compared to Pulp Fiction, ET, Top Gun, Forest Gump, etc, I'd guess that most people who saw all those movies remember the least about Avatar.

Oh well.... made somebody a lot of money just as the world real estate markets were crashing.

We will see how far reaching its impact was when the sequels come.
But for me it was one of the most overrated movies ever made. It had an average plot, and beat viewers over the head with its POV (and I say that as a strong environmentalist).

It had a massive impact on improving motion capture technology, which was used in basically every major blockbuster of the 2010's.

One good thing did come from that overrated nonsense:

the Pandora ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom is jaw-dropping amazing.

I think it was the most visually striking movie I've ever seen.

Everything else was decent, but the visuals were just amazing.

Very true, there were times when I almost believed Sam Worthington was a real actor.

Honestly, best ride in all the parks. (Haven't ridden the new Star Wars ride though. Might have been de-throned.)

Dont forget that it had a big enough impact that we get multiple threads a year about how it didnt have an impact and that it wasnt orginal or that it was an attack on capitalism by eco-terrorist sympathizers

Its impact was never the story. Obviously it had a strong environmental message that was super ham fisted, and I actually said "Come on" out loud when it had a deus ex machina that the characters literally called out during the final battle. As I recall, though, most reviews called it out for having a crappy story, but the visuals were on a whole other level at the time.

What I will always remember, besides the stunning visuals, is the way it did 3D. If Hollywood had truly wanted 3D to become a viable method of moviemaking, they would have sat every single moviemaker down and forced them to study how James Cameron did it. Having worked on a 3D conversion for a game back when it was a big thing, there are certain things that simply don't translate, and it turns into a negative experience for movie-goers (rapid or jerky camera movements, sudden changes in depth, etc.). When you watch Avatar, you have none of these; Cameron saw how he could use 3D to really bring out the visuals and make it something that adds to the experience instead of shoehorning it in as is the case with most movies.

I get that it wasn't the plot that was it's main driver, was only pointing out its flaws.

I don't know any of the technical aspects, but the best way I could describe it is that with Avatar, you felt like you were looking INTO Pandora, rather than things popping out at you.

I remember the first few minutes, seeing that endless corridor in the spaceship where everyone was hibernating, was when I knew this was something special. You could feel how long that ship was.

Lists three very overrated movies and one somewhat overrated film in Pulp Fiction. Avatar was incredible and important to cinema as well as technology. Carry on.

Avatar was just a theatrical experience. I have no desire to sit and watch that on my home TV, why would you? Its not really something that most people could recreate over and over by putting on a blu ray or stream in the years since, IMO.

I say this as an avowed hater of Avatar: Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom was fantastic, but in comparing it against Galaxy's Edge Millennium Falcon ride (forget what it's called, Smuggler's Run??), I'll give that one the edge simply because Star Wars > dogcrap > Avatar. But that Flight of Passage ride was a whole lot of fun, it was probably the most visually striking thing I've ever seen in such an attraction. But consistent with Disney tradition vis-a-vis my family visits to their park in Orlando, they waited two weeks after my latest trip to open the Rise of the Resistance ride.

And I say this as an unabashed Star Wars nerd and defender of all things prequel.... Smuggler's Run was kind of a letdown for me.

Seeing the Falcon in the park, and then walking inside it during the queue -- fantastic. And even seeing the cockpit is pretty damn cool.

But then the ride itself just feels like any other motion ride, IMO. Not much different than Star Tours or the old BTTF ride at Universal. It's basically on rails, and what you do in the ship has little to no effect on the ride experience.

Flight of Passage? I can't get enough of it. I've ridden it a few times now and still love it each time. It's completely immersive and it really feels like you're on the back of a banshee.

I've been on a lot of rides and it honestly might be my favorite of all time, including roller coasters.

I'm going to glance at the highest grossing films of all time for inspiration.

A few jump out to me...

#2 Avatar, as discussed. I don't think anyone can quote a single line from it.

#41 Alice in Wonderland (2010) for the same reasons. IIRC this was on the forefront of the "see it in 3D" craze and it made a lot of money. I don't know anyone who saw it, though, or at least nobody talked about it much. The sequel bombed pretty hard too.

#64 Spectre. Surprised it made this much money. Took them 5 years to make a sequel, because Daniel Craig was pretty out.

It's a little hard to gauge parts of a franchise though. Even if, say, Transformers 3 had no cultural impact, it was part of a 5-movie franchise that made boatloads of money, so I don't think it should count. Transformers as a whole certainly counts.

Supposedly, there were people experiencing depression after viewing Avatar because they didn't want to leave Pandora. I would think that kind of movie would leave a bigger mark as a "Movie". But a decade later...... meh. It's unfair to compare it to a series or "universe". But the ones I named were all one-and-dones that stayed in our culture in one way or another. Avatar now feels more like a tech demo than a cinematic experience.

This started because a younger coworker and I were discussing great movies and finally realized that the Spectacle that was Avatar was not even mentioned, and neither of us had thought or heard much about it since about 2010.

Disney derail: Flight of Passage was the best ride in the Disney theme parks (IMO). My wife rode Rise of the Resistance last weekend and says it has dethroned Flight of Passage. I think Smugglers Run is very meh. I'll be at Disney World next month and will report back on Rise of the Resistance.

I'm just glad the whole 3D movie thing didn't take off more. And especially 3D television. Then again that was before I had lasik surgery. I might enjoy them more now that I'd only be wearing one pair of glasses to see the movie in 3D.
