I finally watched this last night.

Someone explain to me why this is a good movie. DDL did an amazing job acting but it seemed a bit like cleaner cut west coast version of Bill the Butcher. The kid story was weird and depressing, the brother story even more so. And the minister was a fellow nutbag (another solid acting job) with zero endearing qualities. I know it's not supposed to be a feel good movie in any way shape or form (successful on that part) but other than some cool visuals and a couple of great acting jobs, the rest of the story plodded along and for the most part sucked.

Maybe I'm missing something...

Would be a funnier joke if he didn't mention Bill the Butcher in the first post.

I found it be an interesting character piece on an individual's desire to win at all costs. I have seen it three times. Each time I was mesmerized.

/shrug. To each their own. I thought Irishman was mediocre, but there are plenty who are loving it based on the comments. I enjoyed departed, gangs of New York, casino and goodfellas much more than Irishman.

I learned recently that one of my oldest friends was up against Paul Dano for the preacher role. Pretty wild.

It's highly overrated like anything DDL is in. Don't overthink it.

Between bashing the hell out of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood earlier this week, and now this, Stive officially has the worst takes on TexAgs, which is saying something. Congrats.

Before I read BES reply I was thinking "I don't think I've seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...and I dang sure don't remember commenting about it."

I don't mind my stance being different; I presumed this would get some eye rolls from some.

Wow. Hot take on a 12 yr old movie. Join the culture and you can have these kinds of conversations real time.

Also, I just saw an episode of matlock from 1990 for the first time. Sure, I can see why Andy Griffith is a national treasure but can someone explain to me his legal strategy? And why does he sleep with his head under the covers?

I laughed.

There are quite a few series/movies that I've commented on in real time through the years. This just happened to be one that slipped through the cracks for me when it came out (probably due to a newborn in the house) and each time I've sat down and tried to watch it I never made it past the first 30-45 minutes before getting bored and finding something else to do. After forcing myself to sit through it last night I wish I'd of saved myself the time.

You're a good sport. I watched a out 5 or 6 2010 release hit movies this year for the first time, so I can relate (hey that tom hardy is a good actor!).
My honest recollection of TWBB was that it was a great movie, but so long and dark that it would be something I would probably never rewatch.

If you think I'm behind on this one, one of the next ones in my que is Ordinary People (never seen it, but heard good things), 37 years after the Oscar winner was released.

TWBB was just 2007....

It was a highly overrated movie back when it came out. But it's weird and wacky and different and DDL acts his ass off so many thought it was cinematic greatness.

I love the movie, one of my favorites. The soundtrack, cinematography, acting, and story all mesmerize me.

I also saw it only recently, OP, and I was surrounded by people mocking me just as you are. Ignore them.

I too thought it was a strange movie. The cinematography was terrific, as was most of the acting. I could not get over my suspicion that DDL was doing an impression of John Huston, and from what I have read, I was right, though DDL denied it.

Very depressing movie; no good guys or bad guys. Viewers of the TV Fargo series would recognize the man who plays DDL's son as an adult was the deaf mute bad guy in season 2.

Since this is the commenting on old movies thread I just wanted to say that I really like this old MMA movie called Warrior. I like it so much that I bought the digital version from Apple a while back for $4.99.

Add me to the list of people that think There Will br Blood was okay but kind of overrated.

Agreed. It was visual art and great acting, but I wouldn't call it a great movie. By the end I was like "wtf did i just watch!?!" I think you keep watching with the hope that there will be a plot or that it will make sense and it never does. It just gets more pointless.

I guess the point of the movie is to show the ultimate depravity possible with humanity?

My Left Foot is great.
Last of the Mohicans is uneven like every movie Michael Mann has directed.
Gangs of New York is pretty good but far from a masterpiece.

I've always respected Bill Hader's method. When he takes on a role, he doesn't just change costumes or put on a fake mustache like all other actors do, he transforms into the role. You completely forget that you're even watching Bill Hader - so much so that you can't stop talking about the fact that you're watching Bill Hader.

I thought it was entertaining. I usually watch it if I come across it while channel surfing.

One thing that threw me off was that the first time I watched I thought Paul and Eli were the same person with a multiple personality disorder.
