Never heard a single thing about this until I just got home and saw it on the guide and turned it on out of curiosity.

So far from what I've seen it is DARK, but a pretty entertaining and creative interpretation of the story by Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders fame.

Anyone watching this?

Thanks for reminding me. Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis definitely make it a must check out.

So, admittedly I jumped in at the middle of it but being a story I've seen dozens of time it was easy to follow.

I decided to look it up and read several reviews and right now it's about 50/50 with people who liked it and people who really really didn't like it.

It is one of my favorite stories and the original take on it resonated with me. It's not uplifting in the least but I found myself really respecting the direction Knight took it. I'll pretty much put it this way: If you like Peaky Blinders, you SHOULD understand what they are going after here.

And it's brilliantly acted. I'm talking really good. Guy Pearce is hauntingly good portraying Scrooge as the rotten soul he is and the kid who plays Tim and the actress who plays Mary Cratchet are nails.

This isn't for everyone but I really liked the interpretation

45 minutes in and it's very good so far! Probably not appropriate for young kids.

My issue with it was the ending. It didn't feel correct to me. Ie what scrooge did.

It's definitely a more cynical take on the Dickens story. But I loved the ending!

But is GP as good in this as he was playing a drag queen in Priscilla? Because he was awesome at that!

Not a fan at all:
-Pierce was extremely good with what he was given.
-I liked Past and Present. Future was odd.
-Pacing was so weird. An hour of setup. 90 mins with Past. And a 30 sprint to the finish?
-Scrooge was evil. Not a greedy self centered SOB. Evil.
-The whole sex abuse(s) seemed quite unnecessary.
-Scrooge and Marley killed how many people in how many different businesses??
-Emo Bob was annoying.
-Least "Christmas" Christmas Carol ever.

The ending was a train wreck.
-What brought Scrooge to his knees was an accident that had nothing to do with him?
-Mary is some voodoo chick?
-No reconciliation with Fred? Or charity guys? Or anyone?
-And my biggest issues, Scrooge walked away still full of pride. No "I'm sorry, forgive me." Just "I'm about the future now."

Bah. Humbug. Please forgive me George C Scott. I shan't stray again (as long as you don't count the Muppets).

The 1951 version with Alistair Sim is the best one.

Have you seen the Disney animated version with Jim Carey and Gary Oldman? It's quite good.

I actually kind of liked it.

An obvious different take on the whole thing but if I'd never seen any of the others or didn't know the original story, I'd of liked the movie.

Pierce nailed the role.

I strongly disagree...The Muppet Christmas Carol is hands down the best version.

That's what I liked about this adaptation. Redemption and forgiveness shouldn't happen overnight just because someone has an epiphany. Scrooge realized his sins were great and appeared on a journey of turning his life around.

But the wife's curse was silly. It should have been edited out.
