The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has officially announced this year's inductees: THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, DEPECHE MODE, NINE INCH NAILS, The Notorious B.I.G., T. REX and Whitney Houston will all join the class of 2020. They will be inducted on May 2 at a ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall.

2/3 biggest fan vote getters- Dave Mathews and Soundgarden- get denied. That's BS. Love seeing Doobie Brothers make it.

They need to take that "Rock & Roll" off of the name.

Pat Benetar was #2 and didn't get in.

First time ever the fan vote winner not in.

honest question... what's the point of the 'Rock and Roll' hall of fame? I can understand a hall of fame for sports because it's rooted in stats but how do you qualify Music? Music sales... then it just becomes a popularity contest.

Anyway, who cares either way.

I've never exactly understood the RRHOF. Those aren't all rock bands. I guess its just the de facto "music" hall of fame?

Also, I've truly never heard of TREX. Not that I'm not familiar with their music, just no clue that was a band. And I really love dinosaurs

WH was probably the best pop vocalist of her generation and DM influence can be heard in bands as diverse as NIN to Deftones to Arcade Fire to LCD Soundsystem.

First concert I ever saw was Pat Benatar in 1983 in her prime. I was 9 years old. Still thankful to my dad for that memory. She was so dang cool.

A band is lucky to have one album that's greatness from start to finish. Depeche Mode has three.

(That said, they're another example of why we give the side-eye to these "Rock 'n' Roll" inductions.)

T.Rex is best known for Bang a Gong (Get It On). Marc Bolan, the creative force, was one of the big, early influences on glam rock.

Early 1950s, leaned heavily on R&B & blues compared to the 70s & on. I dont see an issue with it personally, since music just keeps evolving.

Getting into the RRHF = winning a gold medal in golf.

Benatar and DMB over TRex and BIG and I have no problem with this selection year.
You knew when The Cure got in last year it was only a matter of time for Depeche Mode to get in

Personally, I think Depeche Mode should have gotten in last year and the Cure this year, but I'm happy DM did make it in.

DM and NIN is a solid couple to get in. A little ironic that the year after he inducts The Cure that Trent Reznor gets the call. I wonder if it's just the current lineup or if Reznor brings back some of the old guard since there's been numerous musicians throughout the years.

Definitely curious to see who does the induction speeches for DM and NIN, really happy to see those two bands get in. I've loved NIN since Pretty Hate Machine even if the newer stuff doesn't do anything for me. I didn't get into DM until I was older, and its a really fun rabbit hole to get lost in.

I think it's clear that "rock n roll" is just a euphemism for "popular music." I don't have a huge problem with that but it does cause some confusion.

My bigger issue is the "critics" involved in the selection process who view it as a means to show off their supposed taste and superiority over the average Joe.

Simon and Garfunkel, -agree
Johnny Cash,-more so than DM or WH
Ramones, -no clue how you can say they aren't rock
Metallica... no clue how you can say they aren't rock

I think there has to be a combination of critical and commercial success to even be nominated. I'm surprised bands like Devo, RATM, Sonic Youth and the Pixies aren't in. And less commercial but critical favorites like Nick Drake (this changed a bit recently with a couple of commercials using his music), Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Kate Bush is a legend in the UK isnt in either...

is there a top 40 HOF, a Rap HOF? an Alternative HOF?

the RRHOF is basically mainstream not country HOF.

Thank you for proving my point. The RRHOF elects many artists from varying genres of music regardless of their closeness to "rock and roll." edit to add: Few people would consider Ramones or Metallica to be 'rock and roll' instead Punk and Metal respectively.

If James Brown, the godfather of soul, is rock and roll, as you acknowledge, and so much of hip-hop is directly descended from his rhythm sections, then hip-hop is a descendant or derivative if 'rock and roll' as well. You can make the lines to WH from Aretha or Janis or Tina. DM is the commercial viable line of electronic 'rock and roll' that includes Kraftwerk, Suicide, and Joy Division (and Yaz and Erasure).
