I got a record player and sound system set up for Christmas, and am trying to see what everyone has on their "must have" list.

The real reason for the gift is that over the past year and a half or so, I've randomly picked up records from friends who were moving or that we're bought for gifts and never given for one reason or another.

Id be interested in hearing input from any genre or time period, but So far, I've got the following, which feels like a good small insight into what I like.

- Boston - Boston
- Huey Lewis - Fore
- Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy
- Beach Boys - Surfs Up
- jerry Jeff - Viva Terlingua
- Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads
- Dwight Yoakam - Guitars, Cadillacs
- Preservation hall jazz band - so it is (this one was a present that was never given. Really surprised how much I like it)

Honestly just buy what you like to listen to. Thats the best advice IMO.

One thing I like to do when I travel is visit the local record store and pick up something new. Something unique to the area or whatever the person behind the counter recommends.

Street Survivors-Lynyrd Skynyrd is a pretty good album from start to finish that I think you would like.
Pet Sounds- The Beach Boys (Paul McCartney often mentions it as his favorite record)
Rubber Soul- Just a great record I prefer the US release
Rolling Stones-Exile on Main Street
Neil Young-Harvest

But all of this is kinda BS. Buy what you like to listen to, not what someone else thinks you should listen to. A lot of my collection is just random stuff but I love it.

Nai is correct. Just get what you want and don't worry about snobs, although I understand you asking the question because I had the same one when I got my record player. All the ones mentioned here are good though and I have most of them.

One thing that vinyl has turned me onto is jazz. I didn't know a thing about jazz beforehand and decided to buy Miles Davis - Kind of Blue because it's on every greatest album list you'll find. It's easily one of my favorite and most listened to albums ever now. I've bought several other albums since including more Davis, Monk, and Coltrane, and I really enjoy the genre now. It definitely seems like it was made to be listened to on vinyl. I would highly recommend Kind of Blue even if you are not a jazz fan.

Finally, I reference this list a lot for albums. I've bought several off of here that I had never really listened to and I don't think I've ever been disappointed.

Next thing you'll know you'll realize how much money you've sunk into it. But it's fun. Enjoy.

If you are going for recording quality alone, here are some of my favorites (a few retreads, but NSIAP):

Dire Straights - Brothers in Arms
10cc - Deceptive Bends
Supertramp - Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America (both have mobile fidelity remasters that are exceptional)
Darkside - get the mofi. Worth it.
Led Zepplin II
Nirvana - Nevermind
Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall (sonics are great for a live album)
SRV - Couldn't stand the weather.

Really, most mobile fidelity remasters are pretty amazing. There are a few duds, but they are the exception and not the rule.
Life's an endless party, not a punch card.

Although you are quite late to vinyl, it's always good to see others develop their musical palate.

Although you have a player, you probably need to get another one to ensure the richest, warmest, deepest sound.

A vintage turntable is an absolute must. I recommend a Pink Triangle deck.

The most authentic equipment can be found in Scotland's rural antique shoppes - a trip far beyond the imagination of your average American "music" consumer, sadly.
