Guess I should have been more clear in my original post. I think he is clearly capable of giving some good performances, I just wish that he would apply that mindset to his personal projects.

Everything he's written or produced has been mindless. He's only acted in movies that you're probably referring to (Spanglish, Reign over me, etc).
