Just saw this and, wow, so, so good. All I knew about The Band was a bit of their music - the classics, of course - but I had no idea how many paths crossed with theirs and how influential they were.

This came out in limited release this past weekend, and if you're a fan of this era of music, it's an absolute must-see, if not in theaters, definitely when it hits streaming...

Interesting that they are singling out Robbie Robertson in the subtitle.

It's based on his memoir and he's basically the one telling the story. At least based on this doc, he comes across as the glue of The Band as well.

No better music for sitting by a campfire at night under the stars than The Band.

Okay that makes sense but still ironic based on what I remember. Robbie was taking all the cash and glory and the rest of the guys didn't like him and were happy to see him break up the band because they were tired of his "I'm bigger than the band attitude." His success without the other guys was pretty limited after that.

They address all that, but it doesn't come across as quite that simple. The other side of the coin, as presented in the film, is that the rest of the guys (save for Garth Hudson) basically became massive drug addicts, leaving Robbie having to carry the entire band on his back. Yes, it's told from Robbie's perspective, and I'm sure he painted a more flattering picture of himself than the reality, but the point of the film is essentially Robbie's attempt to reclaim the narrative from the exact point of view you mention. And he's pretty convincing. That's not to say he sh*t-talks the other guys - quite the opposite - and it wasn't even his idea to make the documentary. But you certainly get why he was the glue and is basically the last man standing of the group. As for his success after that, sure, he never reached the heights of The Band, but he's still incredibly successful in his own right. He still not only produces music but has been Scorsese's soundtrack producer for ages now.
