They should have literally performed the last season on their cell phones as they 'phoned it in' to the end. The family that always tried to stay together no matter what, separated by the flimsiest of excuses. Should have ended after, I don't know, season 6 maybe? (Yes, joke's on me for staying with them for so long but they were solid for at least seven seasons.) Proof that it's better to end early than overstay your welcome.

I too stuck it out to the end, it was once one of my favorite shows but the last several season they had become a character of themselves. Having said that, one nice thing re the finale was the big group hug when they wouldn't let go. A tip of the cap to the series finale of The Mary Tyler Moore show, which the producer's father did.

Figuratively speaking, you can't read.

How were they separated by the flimsiest of excuses?

- Getting into college
- Getting a dream job
- A job transfer

Those don't seem to flimsy to me. Legitimate reasons to move. Especially the first two. Alex, yes it was a bit of a whim, but still.

Of course it ran a couple seasons too long but I still found the ending enjoyable and emotional. It was a great show.

Also stuck with it til the end, the finale was a little underwhelming, but don't know what they could have done to make it better. Agree that they had phoned in the last couple seasons.

Wife and I rode it out until the end. It definitely got repetitive the last few seasons, but we enjoyed the wholesomeness of the show. Not too many like it on tv anymore. I'd give the finale a B. Thought they could've made it a little more emotional and touch on some of the life lessons the show has focused on.

Also, anyone else think of Happy Gilmore when Mitch and Cam sang Endless Love and a few minutes later, Claire was ice skating?

All of the reasons for separations happened within 5 minutes of air time, seemingly coming out of nowhere. With the exception of Cam's coaching job, none of the reasons were even mentioned before the last episode. It was sloppy storytelling that rang hollow to me but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Modern Family, even as it entered its second half and became a significantly lesser version of itself where episodes became way more miss than hit. But I thought the finale did solid work of ending the series. Gave nice wrap-up and real reasons for everyone to moving on. And plenty of touching, heart-wrenching family moments. And I say that as someone who doesn't normally care about that stuff. Not sure what more you could have asked for from this finale.

One of the best comedies of all time, good clean fun. I teared up at the end -

And I love Ed O'Neill - he overcame one of the biggest tight cast characters of all time Al Bundy

Series finale's have to be perfect. Or at least be as good as the show itself. Rare.
