That show was heartwrenching

Just wow

I will say most of it is subtitled because it is in Yiddish

But it gave a look into a culture I know very little about

Not yet. Interested after reading a review, mainly because it's such an insular culture despite existing in dense urban areas.

Watched all 4 episodes tonight.

Rotten tomatoes score of 92.

This may win some emmys. Incredible series.

When I lived in NY my town was 1.5 miles away from Kiryas Joel...THE most orthodox of the orthodox communities.

That such communities are allowed is disturbing and what they get away with is frightening...the women get treated like property and somehow NY allows this with no issue because they vote en masse...

But then again NY elects Schumer again...nothing in this series is of any news to anyone who lives in southern NY

My take always from living next to this town for 15 years:

Rude
Entitled
Use religion as a weapon
Have economic advantages NO one else does
Women can't drive
Non Hasidic men cannot address one of their women (I found that out the hard way after asking a simple question at a mall)
Fertility that is off the charts
Can buy property outside their town, but no one can do anything in theirs
Their women all wear the same creepy wig (color and style)
The day to shop was ALWAYS Saturday...

It always struck me as odd that if a white-only Christian community or a Muslim-only community was proposed, the wave of indignation and rage would be off the charts...yet in super "progressive" NY this was not only allowed but celebrated...

Why the thumbs down? Because they suck?

The series shows that and her struggle - great miniseries.

I also love Moishe's character. He's the real threat. "There's a different Torah on the road."

Went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole. Didn't realize Yiddish is a german dialect. Who knew.

What strikes me as odd is all of the whites only Christian communities (all of Mormonism for one) you ignored to set up your claim that poor racist whites are being treated unfairly.

We enjoyed it. Very well done. Certainly a challenging way of life in today's modern world. I admire those who can live that life but certainly understand others escaping from it.

Doing a little reading about them, I can understand how West Point and others who live near them could be frustrated by them.

ANY town allowed to exist with tangible benefits regardless of religion, color or whatever is wrong...I gave two examples...you provided a third. Thanks for the addition.

it's not a documentary - it's a story about how a girl LEAVES the community.

You left one off: really terrible, aggressive drivers with an affinity for minivans, most of which are Japanese.

Esty, Yanky, and Moishe were incredible. They should all be nominated for awards

Is there going to be a season 2? Had no idea it was only 4 episodes when we started. It sorta just ended leaving about 100 lose ends.

Are you saying that if I wanted to buy property there, that the law would forbid it? Or that all the Jewish owners would refuse to sell? The two are vastly different things.

I doubt it but maybe.

It was based on a memoir written by a woman that escaped the community in Williamsburg. The part about the music and moving to Germany was fictional so who knows...

I couldn't find a synopsis on the real story. I assumed the show followed the book, but I guess not. I find it weird that they ended where they did. Especially with the threat at the end they they would be coming after the baby.

Was she pregnant in the real story? If so, did she keep custody?

This was fantastic. Binged the whole show. Very interesting and distrusting view into an insular community. The acting from all parties was really outstanding.

Wanted to bump this thread because this show deserves to be seen. Esty's true story is a story of a woman breaking the chains of bondage. The actors, all of them, nailed it.
