So, as many many of us are having to isolate or adapt during this time, I'm sort of not doing so well with my sleep schedule. Doing all the recommended things, but it is what is is...

Tonight's late time viewing is The French Connection.

I think it is an incredible film. Big Hackman fan. Popeye Doyle is the man

Roy Scheider -great. Fernando Rey - ditto.

Anyways, curious what you film critics think.

Go read up on that. Much of that chase scene was performed without permits, without closing crossing streets, without notification to the public. Many of the pedestrian and vehicular near misses were very, very real. In fact, the crash with the white car was real too.,..the guy in the white car had nothing at all to do with the movie. He was on his way to work and drove into the chase scene.

I read up on Bill Hickman, as I recognized him from Bullitt. He was in that classic chase scene.

He drove in The French Connection chase and played federal agent Mulderig.

He drove in a chase scene in the Seven Ups, chased by Roy Scheider"s character. That film also included Tony Lo Bianco.

It all caused me to recall Hackman's El Camino escape scene in Enemy Of The People.

Yep. Great movie. I saw it when it first came out (no idea of the plot twist) and it was a wild ride. I still love it even though I know what's coming.

Great movie, one that I have not watched in many, many years. Gonna have to add it to my watching queue.

I'm not real big on award ceremonies, such as the Academy Awards, especially the last few decades. I just don't care and don't see a connection between what I like and what is considered "award winning".

That said, back in my youth, there seems to be a sweet spot around the time of The French Connection.

It was "Best Picture" in 1971.
The year prior, Patton won.
The year after was The Godfather.
The next year, American Graffiti was a runner up.

Dirty Harry came out the same year as The French Connection. Just sayin'.

I watched this for the first time last night. Gene Hackman has always been one of my favorites and didn't disappoint. Movie has a great late 60s early 70s gtitty vibe much like Bullitt, and there is a lot happening outside of the dialogue. I'm not a fan of when a movie does the title cards at the end and says what happens to the characters. Single gunshot at the end would have been much more effective without them in this case (a la Sopranos go to black) I haven't seen French Connection 2 yet, but I know the principle is Popeye going to Marseilles to find Alain. It's is interesting that at the end of 1 they freeze frame title cards says Alain was never caught and that Popeye and Cloudy were transferred out of narcotics - must have not planned on #2 when the original was made. Looking forward to checking #2 out!
