A discussion in the thread for the Parks and Recreation special (about the insane Thursday night NBC block that once boasted 30 Rock, Community, The Office, and Parks and Rec all on the same night) got me thinking about the best TV years of the modern era. So I started jotting down the years a few of my favorite shows aired, which soon turned into a spreadsheet, which then turned into this post/me going all out, listing every highly regarded/buzzed about show I could think of, all the way back to HBO's Oz. Oz is considered the first "prestige"/non-network drama of the modern era, which made way for The Sopranos, which ultimately ushered in the "Golden Age" of television.

Yes, this is a highly subjective list, but I tried my best to include as many popular/prestige series as I could, though I had to draw the line somewhere. No animated series. No live-studio-audience sitcoms. No procedurals. And only a select few network dramas/comedies. The is basically the cream of the crop from network/cable/streaming over the past 23 years. I'm sure I've missed a couple notable titles, so let me know if I have, but more than likely I left certain shows off for a reason.

All that said, what say you?

What's the "best" TV year of the modern era?

What's your favorite TV year of the modern era?

Personally, I have to go with 2012 as my favorite. Specifically, from April to May of 2012, these were the Thursday night and Sunday night line-ups...

THURSDAY NIGHT
30 Rock - Season 6
Community - Season 3
The Office - Season 8
Parks and Recreation - Season 4

SUNDAY NIGHT
Mad Men - Season 5
Game of Thrones - Season 2
Girls - Season 1
Veep - Season 1

... with the first part of Breaking Bad Season 5, Eastbound & Down Season 3, and Louie Season 3 following in the months after (and yes, I enjoyed the first few seasons of Girls). I just can't imagine two nights in the same week ever rivaling those two nights again.

Also in 2012...

Justified on Tuesday nights. And then Always Sunny on Wednesday nights as a primer to the aforementioned Thursday night.

The year that immediately jumps to mind is 2013, which brought us the final season of Breaking Bad, and S3 of GoT. (More specifically, the Red Wedding.)

A hell of a year. Those were massive pop culture events for me.

Just to get another obvious year under consideration...

2014 was solid. Season 1 of True Detective and Fargo. Season 4 of GoT which was fantastic as well. Season 2 of The Americans. The first season of Silicon Valley. The Walking Dead was still pretty strong at the time. I always liked Archer: Vice. Season 2 of House of Cards. A lot of stuff that has been mentioned here was running at the time like Parks and Rec, Louie, etc.

I'm sure there's more.

2011 is my pick as you get the last season of Friday Night Lights in there and New Girl was getting started. Justified on FX too.

Also, well done on the spreadsheet, TC.

2008. Last season of The Wire and first season of Breaking Bad. The ending and beginning of the two greatest shows of all time.

2004 was pretty solid:
Sopranos
The Wire
The Shield
Lost (season 1)
Six Feet Under
Entourage

Those are just the ones I watched (granted majority after 2004).

West Wing/Curb etc as well.

The Goldbergs S1

others you mentioned had some huge seasons too
GOT - S3 the red wedding
BB S5B - final season
30 Rock S7 - final season
The Office S9 - final season

plus

2011 for recent history. Comedies like the Office, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny, and even a Curb season. Drama had season 2 of Justified which might be one of my favorite seasons of any show ever. Oh, and Season 1 of Game of Thrones was on. Beyond comedies and dramas, there was the second to last season of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations and Top Gear was finding broader appeal on BBC America. The only problem with 2011 is that fracturing on viewership was picking up speed and DVRs were coming enough that shows were no longer next day conversations.

2009 was a great year for sci-fi. BSG, Fringe, Lost, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary were all shows I watched.

NCIS has been on for 17 Years, but not on the list.

Where would America be without Rule #9?

I'm going with this but it's primarily due to (1) my age (2) this was a stop down event and (3) if you missed it you didn't get to see it until reruns came out later in the year and then you had to plan around those too to catch it. (We were never good about scheduling the VCR.)

With current technology, I have zero context of when shows came out or originally aired although I would go with the Mad Men and GoT combo for second place for sure. For the first two seasons we watched that every Sunday night until we got off schedule due to life. We ultimately binged through Mad Men in later years but are still encased in amber having only seen GoT Seasons 1-3. It's on our list to finish.

Can't believe I left off Scrubs. Just added it. Eight seasons, 2001 to 2009.

(I'm not counting the abysmal ninth season that completely retooled the show, which the creator himself doesn't even consider to be part of the original run).

No procedurals. They're like live-studio-audience sitcoms in that there are too many to include (and that most of them aren't good).

Yeah, that's a good argument. I think I liked most of the 2012 seasons better, but the 2013 additions you mention probably do put that year over the top.

The only reason I choose 2011 over '12 or '13 is Friday Night Lights.

2013 should be obvious but it's hurt to me by my favorite overall show of them all Mad Men having it's worst season that year. But this is the year Game of Thrones really became a national culture thing with red wedding and breaking bad had by far its biggest year plus house of cards and Americans debuting strong. I started breaking bad for the first time in august 2013 and caught up just in time for the final season and those few months in 2013 are still the greatest memory ever for me experiencing a show.

August 2013 with the Johnny Manziel news craziness and the football preseason hype along with bingeing breaking bad will never be topped. Peak Aggie football, peak texags, peak tv
