For $5 you can get Epix for a month, and while Epix is largely worthless, their original series War of the Worlds and especially Pennyworth are easily worth the price of a beer.
War of the Worlds S1 was a pretty interesting take on Wells' original story. Set in Europe of today, it follows 3 groups of survivors as they navigate the post-invasion world where the vast majority of humanity has been wiped out. Good writing, characters with some depth and complexity and the aliens (those that are shown at any rate) hit incredibly close-to-home in the new Covid reality (google Boston Dynamics and Singapore). I'll eagerly be back for S2 when it's available. Not for kids.
We just started Pennyworth and 3 episodes in holy shiz is it good. An origin story for Wayne family butler and Batman buddy Alfred, it follows Alfred's post-war exploits in a dystopian London. With a truly wild set of characters and a host of nasty (but believable) groups who overlap and are at odds with one another, I can't wait to see where this one goes. Definitely NOT for kids, and I wouldn't watch it with my parents or in-laws either. It's pretty messed-up, but in a good way that just works with the setting and characters. All of the DCU should be like this.
