The Right Stuff

I'm a sucker for all things space program, so I'll watch this. But the 1983 movie is, IMO, unbeatable. I read that this new show will not involve Chuck Yeagar, who is a major part of the original movie (I've never read the book, probably need to fix that error). It also will be without the rousing score that Bill Conti did. I know nothing of the cast for this version, but the original cast including Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward, Scott Glenn, Sam Shephard, Lance Henriksen, Scott Paulin, Veronica Cartwright, Babara Hershey, and Pamela Reed cannot be beat.

It's been a while since I've read the book, but if I remember correctly, Yeager wasn't in it that much other than the beginning that focused on the lives of the test pilots.

Just curious - have you watched For All Mankind on Apple TV? I just binged watched this over the past week and would give it a thumbs-up. It is historical fiction based upon the Space Race - not exactly a documentary - but I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to Season 2.

Don't have Apple TV, so no. That is something that I'd definitely watch.

I'm a little cautious about season two... I feel like they're setting it up to be an overt "girl power" sort of show... hope I'm wrong. The initial season was pretty well done for the most part.

I am sure I will watch it because I am a sucker for all things NASA during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. However, I don't think anything will ever beat From the Earth to the Moon.

Ooo I can't wait for this thanks for the heads up. My brother was a test pilot at Edwards AFB so I'm sure he will want to see this as well

I am a contractor at JSC and I always like to point out to people the scene where the Germans show the 7 the Mercury capsule for the first time and they all complain about there is no window. Why did you need a window you aren't actually flying it, and the window just causes structural issues. Stinking astronaut office.

My son is in the space portion of his science class. Asks me a lot of questions which I happily answer in detail. We watched the Right Stuff Saturday night and realized that most of my answers were from the movie! Had to do some research and the movie is pretty damn accurate.

He looked at the run time and said, "I don't want to watch a 3 hour movie." When it was over he said, "Can we watch it again."

Great movie that stands the test of time for being informational and entertaining.

Chuck Yeager is still alive, FYI.

Yeah, that shocked me. I could have sworn he was dead. Too mean to die.

I encourage you to read the book! It is very well done.

Yeager plays a prominent role in it just as he does in the movie: he is a sort of touchstone, a baseline definition of what "the right stuff" is, just as he is in the movie. What nonsense that he did not become an astronaut simply because he did not have a college education.

The Right Stuff set the standard for 1960s-based space movies. All the others, including For All Mankind, try to emulate that feel.

I actually started For All Mankind but couldn't really understand why they created a fictional story about the space race when the real story is just as good if not better...

Just came here to say that Chuck Yeager was a badass. Became an ace in 1 day. If you have seen the movie, you know he broke the sound barrier with broken ribs. When he crash landed, his glove had melted to his hand. He scraped it off with a knife.

Never bought his own gum, though.

Indeed. The first time he saw a jet, he shot it down.
