I don't have a suggestion but remember reading in an Allman Bros biography that I believe Gregg got crossways with them and had to either testify against one of them or something related to drug buying.

There's an excellent documentary on organized crime in the south out there. I think it's available on Hulu right now. Very well done. Comprehensive and informative, if a little heavily focused on a couple of southern states. Timothy Olyphant makes for an excellent narrator.
