You ever "discover" a song/album years after you've had it?

Discover as in truly put some time into it and realize how awesome it is? I am notorious for getting albums and listening to a few songs and then sleep on the rest until they randomly pop up later.

Case in point, Trivium is one of my favorite bands and has been for years. I have an older album from them that I enjoyed overall and listened to a coupla songs from but largely considered that album to be one of their weaker ones. I have no idea where I came up with that to be honest since I never gave it the time of day but it happened.

Fast forward to today and doing some cleaning and threw it on and actually listened to the full album for once. Blown away. I am pissed at myself for not giving it the full treatment all that time ago. This is not an isolated incident though. Common even. This is a horrible habit I have and I guess I am just ranting here to assuage my guilt.

Anyone else do this?

Same situation.

TOOL - Undertow

Saw Sober and Prison Sex on MTV and bought the album because of those.
Listened to the rest and thought it sucked.

Years later, bought Aenima and fell in love with it.
Broke out Undertow again and checked it out. Holy crap! Great album front to back. No idea why I didn't like it at first.

The Killers - On Top

One of my favorites of theirs now. For years I would just skip it.

Not necessarily an album but went through this with Grateful Dead. Really only knew the songs you would hear played on the radio then one day decided to listen to "This is Grateful Dead" playlist on Spotify and have been obsessed ever since diving deep into their entire catalog. You could say it's been a long strange trip.

I didn't get into GD till a few years ago. But I still can't listen to their studio stuff. Thankfully Spotify has a huge collection of their live albums. Jerry and Bob playing are great soundtracks to put on a road trip.

Check out the version of Sugaree that was recorded in Hartford, CT in 1977.

LL Cool J's album 14 Shots to the Dome.

It was a big disappointment. I bought it right when it came out and listened through a few times and basically threw it into my closet to never listen to it again.

Some later interview he gave in a magazine he admitted that it was the last album required on a contract he had and he really just threw some stuff together and pushed it out without really trying.

Came across it like 10 years later while going through all my old CDs while smokin pot one night. Skipped through every song after the first minute or so, remembering how much I was disappointed in it. Then I got to the last song on it. Crossroads.

Listening to it now, it's still pretty damn good, but that night, as high as I was, the song and the lyrics blew me away to the point I was calling up all my friends telling them they had to listen to the song.

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Had no idea of the greatness of that album when I bought it as a kid.

During all this I've gone on a reading run of music biography's.

One book I read was "Girl In A Band" by Kim Gordon. I was well aware of Sonic Youth but never had really heard them or any of their albums. After reading I bought "Daydream Nation" on vinyl and I frickin love it!!! Such a great album!

Our Lady Peace

I was gifted their second album as a kid. Bought the 3rd and 4th myself. Casually kept up with them over the years. One day I went back and listened to their 1st album. Dang good.

I've recently gotten deep into the Black Crowes Lions album. I got the CD when it first came out when I heard the single Lickin' on the radio. Soul Singing was another song that hooked me right away. It wasn't until recently that I fell in love with Miracle To Me and Cosmic Friend off that album.

I've considered Led Zeppelin a great band since high school. And I had a vinyl copy of every one of their albums (even Coda). And I made tapes from the albums for my car. SO, I was pretty familiar with the "hits" and highlights of their catalog.

But Physical Graffiti, in particular, held lots of "deep tracks" that I left off my cassette dubs and, honestly, I only discovered in the last 10 years or so that I finally decided they're my favorite band. "In My Time of Dying"; "In the Light" "Ten Years Gone" and "Black Country Woman" are examples of songs that I really, really appreciate now and can't believe I didn't give them more attention back then. Four great album sides and I really only bothered getting to know Side 2. (Houses of the Holy, Trampled Under Foot, and Kashmir)

Dylan, Street-Legal (1999 second mix)

- Changing lyrics are wonderfully evocative (probably about the musical industry itself)
- New Pony is hilarious. Laugh out loud funny
- We Better is a top 10 Dylan for me, and he's never done it live
- 70s vocals my favorite by far. And lots of conviction on this album. He means it.
- Who watches Neil Diamond, and then has a short Vegas phase, complete with an expensive tour? Dylan

One of my all time favorite bands.

Their debut Naveed is great but the three album run that follows (Clumsy, Happiness... Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch, Spiritual Machines) is an all time run in my eyes. Still some of my favorites.

They are still around you know. They moved a little more towards stadium rock in my eyes, but still catchy and awesome.

I won sound check passes one time they were in Houston @ the House of Blues. It was like 12 of us that got to hang out and watch and meet them. They were all super nice guys.

They released a full concert on YouTube during this COVID time that's good stuff.

Ya I know they are still around. But most of their current music is kind of boring to me. Nothing will beat the 3 album run you mentioned.

I do like Raine's solo stuff. His song Montreal is awesome.

Man he really struggles to hit the raspy notes these days. His voice has gotten deeper with age.

Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Rediscovered it 20 years later
Originally only listened to "Flight of Icarus" and "The Trooper"

Side A is perfect now. Absolutely perfect!

Yes. That is another reason their newer stuff isn't as good, Raine went away from the high pitched falsetto that helped define their sound early on. I believe he did it to protect his throat in the name of longevity. Probably a wise move on his part but I miss the old Raine hitting those notes for sure.
