One of the best ten films I've seen. Top 5 really. I know Mann is writing a prequel novel to be released soon.

Great little nugget that Pacino and Mann dropped a couple of years ago when discussing the film, Pacino's character is using cocaine throughout the film which is why he is so edgy. That adds another layer to the film. It also seemed like they were alluding to Pacino actually using it while filming which wouldn't be that shocking.

Great flick. Shame it came in Pacino's DGAF portion of his career.

One of my favorite movies. I'm not sure I really want a prequel/sequel treatment to it though.

Michael Mann was a guy that could do no wrong IMO for so long, but then starting with the Miami Vice movie (oddly enough), he seemed to lose a bit from his fastball. I could see a prequel being somewhat interesting although difficult to cast in a sellable way. Not interested in a sequel. Most of the characters died. Of those that didnt, Pacino is older than dirt and Val Kilmer is all ****ed up.

Disagree slightly, but i do think this and Scent of a Woman were probably the last great roles he had. To your point , it was right around this time is when he became the Col. Frank Slade caricature we all love and hate in every film hes done since. I think he actually has some great moments in this one though, like the diner scene, and the scenes with Natalie Portman, but he does devolve into the "Gimme all you got!" "When i think of a womans ass...." coked out version of himself. Hoo-ah!

Man, i like like me some Miami Vice. I think that movie was screwed by having to do some re-writes, which crated some plotholes, and some serious ego-mania with Foxx and Farrell. The Asian chick love interest was also a miss. But the style of it was very cool. The action sequences were well done i thought.

Collateral was a great flick (edit: for some reason i thought this came after MV) But in that respect, hes only done 3 movies since. MV, Public Enemies and Blackhat. PE was solid I though. not great, but not bad. Didnt see Blackhat but i heard it sucked.

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

Yeah, Collateral was the last quality one IMO. Miami Vice had the classic dark Michael Mann look/style that I love, but the story and casting was crap. I thought Farrell was a terrible choice for Crockett and the asian chick was awful. Whether it was the writing, Farrell's acting, or probably some of both, the entire Crockett character was different than what we'd gotten to know which threw the entire thing off IMO. We got this quiet, sullen, mumbly dude.

And while he has done only 3 since, he's never been real active in terms of volume. He was definitely a quality over quantity guy, but that's why 3 misses in a row seems like a real drought.

I got the impression that Pacino was using quite a bit of cocaine in the 90's and used it during Heat and Mann just rolled on it. Heat was a film I watched with my family as a kid (ha) and loved, I rewatched it in the last year or so and it still holds up. Absolutely incredible.

I love MM, but even his greatest films like heat and collateral are upon rewatch are just several of the best set pieces ever filmed surrounded by a mediocre movie.
Collateral has some just incredible scenes, but the ending is dumb, the movie drags in places and is probably 15 min too long, and Tom Cruise wig choice is horrible. But dammit if the middle hour 15 isn't just freaking amazing.
Last of the Mohicans has maybe the greatest 10 minute no dialogue scene I've ever seen.

It's been awhile. Are you referring to the end where after the British officer is killed the three of them run alongside the mountain to kill Magua? If so, yeah that's one of the greatest dialogue free sequences ever filmed.

Been a while for me, too, but the ending after sheet goes down, blonde soldier dies, and DDL is running along the side of the mountain, the daughter swan dive, etc.

Black Hat was terrible, I'm guessing it's another one of those films that got an extensive rewrite to appeal to the Chinese market.

Loved Heat. Not sure how I feel about a prequel to this and especially not a sequel. They going to continue with whats her face and insane Val Kilmer?

I always thought Heat felt really bloated. Good movie, but needed about 30 minutes of edits.

Heat is long, but I'm not exactly sure what I would trim. Trying to cover 3 family/girlfriend/wife relationships on top of everything else that is happening in the core cops vs. robbers line is what really adds to the length. But the issue is that all 3 are fairly necessary to establish the whole theme of the movie as far as what these guys are willing to risk and walk away from to do what they do.

Disagree. Could have added 15-20 minutes. There should have been scenes of Pacino's character chipping coke so the audience understands his hostility. Could have been a scene for each criminal to better get to know them.

Judd. I don't even remember Portman in this! She was daughter of someone....?

She plays Pacino's stepdaughter who tries to kill herself because her real dad is a deadbeat that ditched her and her mom is a slooot.

Love Love Love HEAT but I feel like a prequel has way more a chance of being bad than good.
Enrico Pallazzo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree. I think you need to just let this work of art be. The more I thought about this, the more a recast prequel version of Pacino, DeNiro, and Kilmer would be pretty ridiculous. Now if there is a good, dark story set in classic Michael Mann style about a crew, great. But do it as its own thing.

Heat was great, but they blew the ending.

No way he stops the car to go after that guy.

Excited for the heatverse

I'd probably be interested in seeing what Mann can do with that concept.

But, I'd rather he finish telling the story of whatever happened to this guy:

There's no way that evil ******* died in the plane crash at the end of Season 2 of Crime Story.

To this day on any rewatch I hope Neil doesn't stop at that hotel.
