With the crazy numbers we see in the violence/deaths in Chicago, why hasn't there been a major movie based on this subject? Some of the best movies of the 1990s were based on what was going on in Los Angeles, but I don't remember seeing anything about what's going on in Chicago the last 10 years.

Have I missed something, has something already been released? Seems like it would make a great movie. What the hell is going on there? What's different?

Probably affiliated with them today but in the 60s-70s Chicago was ruled by the Vice Lords. We learned about them in Into Anthropology at A&M. They were the first AA street gang to organize and gain political clout, the course was fascinating.

I remember hearing about Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, and Latin Kings when I was growing up in the Chicago area in the 80's.

I go up to Pilsen about once a year. Last August I was warned about a gang called party people when some guys tried to start stuff with me at a bar.

Sounds like everyone else is about as clueless as I am...which is sort of the point. Everyone knows about how things are out of control there, but how much do we really know about the what's and the who's? I guess one of the reasons Hollywood hasn't done much with it is because it's not happening in their back yard (like in the 90's).
Seems like a great movie sitting there though. Might have to come from somebody on the inside though, and that would be tough to sort of "infiltrate" or make friends with that crowd, and get a story.

In the late 80s/early 90s, there was a huge interest with the American public in gang life, that was likely brought on by the explosion of rap music celebrating gang life. I think before that time, most black on black violence was kind of ignored, but once gang life became mainstream, people wanted to see movies about it. Now, that type of music isn't made anymore, and in our ultra PC environment, black on black violence has become ignored again. Anytime you hear about a black person's death, its from a cop or another white person. Black directors seem to be more interested in making movies about black people living in a white person's world and I don't think a white director would be willing to touch that subject matter today, as it would likely be career suicide.

Good summation, I was kind of thinking along these lines too. Nobody wants to touch it. The news kind of blows past it too, actually. I mean, how many of you knew that 49 were shot and 10 were killed in Chicago gang violence over the Memorial Day weekend?

There have been Chicago gang movies in the last decade - Chiraq from 2015 comes to mind.
