Hard to believe that was 22 years ago.

You might remembered him from such roles as...

SNL
The Simpsons
NewsRadio
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Jingle All The Way

A genius funny man gone way before he hit his peak.

And God bless Jon Lovitz.

Guy was an absolute genius. His work on the Simpsons was legendary enough, but if you haven't seen Newsradio you are missing out on one of the funniest characters of all time in Bill McNeal

Also he was supposed to be Zapp Branigan on Futurama. Would've been amazing having Troy McLure in space.

The greatest comedic character actor of all time. And it's not even close.

If his name was in the credits, then you were guaranteed to enjoy whatever crap film for at the very least any scene he was in. His death left a void that I don't think anyone has filled.

There have been very, very few occasions when a celebrity's passing made me genuinely sad. Jim Henson, Carrie Fisher (my first celebrity crush) and Hartman.

His SNL audition video is so great. His brilliance and skill on full display. Crazy how fully formed he was in this audition and how many of these characters showed up again on SNL and other places. The German guy doing impressions is genius.

Something about that grin always made little Swarlos laugh. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I found out the chick sitting across from him was his wife and murderer. That swinging of her earring? That was because she kept trying to turn around and get her face on camera.

100% Agree. If you don't know the story ...

In an interview with Dennis Miller , comedian Jon Lovitz explained that Andy Dick's constant complaining about his arrival on "Newsradio" led to an argument during which Lovitz accused Dick of contributing to the death of Phil Hartman.

Lovitz had joined the show, of which Dick was a co-star, after his friend Hartman was shot and killed by Hartman's wife, Brynn.
"[Andy] was just complaining and really giving me a hard time for no reason. Phil told me that they had a Christmas party and Andy was doing cocaine and he gave it to Phil's wife Brynn, who had been sober for 10 years. So Andy said to me, 'Well, you shouldn't be here,' and I said, 'Well, I wouldn't be here if you hadn't given Brynn coke in the first place.'"

Eventually, the two worked out their differences, or so Lovitz thought.
"Later on we made up, and I said 'I'm sorry I said that,'" Lovitz said. "I realized it really wasn't his fault. Everything was fine for years."
But everything changed when Dick visited a restaurant of which Lovitz is part-owner. Lovitz said he was sitting at a table with a friend, and a group at the table next to them treated them to some peach liqueurs. Apparently, Dick and a friend came over to their table, and downed both liqueurs.
"He's standing there with liqueur dripping down his chin and he says, 'I put the Phil Hartman hex on you, you're the next one to die,'" said Lovitz. "And he's smiling, and my blood just went to my head. I wanted to smash him, but if I hit him he would have gone flying into the table behind him. He was really drunk."

i think you had a copy and paste error, so here's the coda to that story

Quote:

Lovitz told Dick's friend to take his buddy out of the restaurant and vowed never to let him back in again. He didn't see Dick again until Wednesday night, when Lovitz was performing his weekly show at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.

"So I do my show and there's all these people there and then I'm done and the MC's up on stage and I see Andy's up on stage and I'm like 'Oh my God, what's he going to do?'" he said.

Lovitz met up with Dick in the packed lobby after the show. Lovitz wanted an apology from Dick for his "Hartman's hex" comment. But, apparently, Dick hadn't really buried the hatchet over their initial argument during their stint on "Newsradio."

"I just wanted him to say, 'Oh, I'm sorry,'" said Lovitz. "Then he leans into me, 'Well you know why I said that? Because you said I killed Phil Hartman that's the first thing you said to me when you got on the show.' I just lost it so I grabbed him by the shirt and I pushed him against the wall. And he's just smiling at me, and then I realized 'oooh, here's my chance.' So I grabbed him by his shirt and pushed him really hard and I smashed his back and his head into the bar. And I did it again. I would have kept going, but the doorman broke it up."

Miller congratulated Lovitz, whom he had introduced as "one of the most loveable, easygoing guys I know." He said, "I love this story. Good for you my friend."

He had been doing those characters for years at the Groundlings. His story is pretty great. He was doing art for album covers and stuff and he never really wanted to be an actor. He just liked the Groundlings and doing improv. He was in his 40s when he finally gave in and auditioned for SNL.

Rogan talks about Hartman on occasion. Sounds like once he figured out that he married the wrong woman he was really stressed and worried all the time. He was worried they'd end up divorced and she'd break him financially by the time it was all over, and it was taking a toll on him. She was a failed actress who married a man considered iconic to a lot of us, and she couldn't handle his success, and killed him.

He was a truly unique talent, there's never been anyone quite like him. Loved him on SNL, The Simpsons, and Newsradio is one of my all time favorite shows. Losing him and Farley were both tough on me, both of them died in tragic fashion and neither of them needed to. My daughter loves the Shrek movies, and they bum me out because Farley was hired to be Shrek, Mike Myers was Farley's replacement. I recommend The Chris Farley Show if you haven't read it, it hits all the highs and lows of his life.

Didn't mean to derail anything about Hartman, but every time I think about his death, it takes me right to Farley.

In one of the true golden eras of SNL, Hartman and Jan Hooks could carry the show by themselves. It was truly an embarrassment of riches with the talent during that stretch. This was the short film they played as part of the tribute to Hartman after he was murdered. Amazing stuff.

It seems like after hear a bunch of former cast members that Farley and Hartman are two of the most well thought of cast members.

Everyone from the Farley years says hes the funniest person they ever saw. He was just lightning in a bottle and there will never be anyone like him.

They all seem to agree that Phil was one of, if not the most, talented people to ever be on SNL. The writers loved him because he could make anything funny.

To this day this celebrity death is the one I found maybe most shocking. All of it. The circumstances, the fact I loved him so much as an entertainer, his age.

Todd Snider has a story in his book about going to rehab for his pain pill Addiction, and goes into detail about how one girl would never shut the hell up about her lifestyle. Constantly bragging about she was dating a celebrity but would not say the name, only gave his initials "PH"

Years later, he turns on the tv to see the news of Phil's death and instantly thinks "PH".

Sure enough they post the murderers pic and it was the same girl he was in rehab with.
