Looking for the next Sci-Fi series during CV isolation. Wifey thinks it a good pick.

I didn't like it and bailed after a few episodes. Tried it a few more times and still couldn't commit. I didn't like that goes back in time introduces wild stuff we hadn't seen in later canon like the spore drive thing. I found Picard more watchable.

All that is explained in season 2. There's a pretty big reveal at the end.

Season 2 was much better but still wasn't great. The best thing about it was the Enterprise crew. The Discovery crew isn't very likable in my opinion. I think the new spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will get us closer to classic Trek.

The best thing they have done so far was the Short Trek The Trouble with Edward starring Jon Benjamin and Rosa Salazar.

If it involves an alternate timeline, I'm calling CBS and asking for my money back.

What I found difficult about the first few episodes was they recycled the worst parts of past Star Trek as if they were features and not bugs: techno-babble, lengthy expositions from the female computer voice, clunky observations of human nature, etc. It's like the writers looked at dialog like "Captain, shield at 69 percent" and they said "Nice! People will know they're watching Star Trek now!"

I found Picard refreshing in that it fell into far fewer of those traps. If Discovery improved on that with time, that's great.
