Never heard of these folks.
But I still have my fish spurs.
That song brought a little tear of nostalgia to my eye.
EDIT:
Does this song make sense if you were not in the Corps?
"Shoot me the blood, shoot me the sky"--
In the old Duncan Mess Hall, all the objects and food had their own names, and instead of asking someone to "pass" something, you said "Shoot the ____ " (whatever you wanted). So the speaker is asking someone to pass the ketchup and the water.
Seniors in the Corps wear tall riding boots, the mark of an officer in the WWII-era army; the boots come with silver spurs. Fish made their own spurs to wear prior to the SMU game (their mascot was the mustang). I don't know if they still do this.
The last line of the chorus refers to the standard reply of a fish to an upperclassman who has asked him something the fish does not know: "Sir, not being informed to the highest degree of accuracy I hesitate to articulate for fear that I may deviate from the true course of rectitude. In short, sir, I am a very dumb fish and do not know, sir." The fish said that in my father's day (Class of '44--you can see one of the actors recite it in the WWII movie made at A&M, "We've Never Been Licked"). I still remember that.
The Chicken and the Texas Hall of Fame were not yet in existence during my years.
