I'm a music snob in a lot of respects, but I'm also ride or die for Taylor. Nobody has written better pop songs over the last decade than her.

Surprise new album dropping tonight. 11 songs co written with Aaron Dessner (from The National), one co-written and featuring Bon Iver.

This should be interesting and potentially great. I'm on board!

It's funny how she has become the heel of the pop world recently. If Kanye has just waited 10 years to run up on stage and steal the microphone from her, he would have probably been praised.

How has she become the heel of the pop world?

Maybe 3-4 years ago she had a moment, which was what the whole Reputation album was about. Since then she's made up with Katy Perry, and as far as the West/Kardasian stuff, the more evidence that came out the more Taylor appeared to be right.

Since then I don't recall any drama. She's had another #1 album, used her clout to benefit all artists when negotiating her latest record deal, and randomly donated thousands to people she saw in need.

Doesn't sound like much of a heel to me.

Meanwhile Kanye (though talented as an artist) is off have episodes in Montana.

Anyone who gets that big is going to have some resentment... She's still huge and it only helps her stardom though

I'd say the majority of Taylor hate is similar to Drake. People just think she's pretty fake and everything she does is calculated to help her image. Like Drake becoming friends with any sports team/player that is big at the time (wonder if he returns Johnny's calls these days?), and Taylor's whole eye-rolling "Girl Squad!" publicity shoot weekends

But I like Taylor's music for the most part, and I'm interested in seeing the direction of this album

Wasn't the story that she said Kanye said in one of his songs "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex!" without her permission, and then Kim kardashian released a video that showed them asking if she was cool with it over the phone and she thought it was great?

If so I don't see how she's "right" about it at all.

Yes but the original videos Kim released were snippets, then earlier this year the entire video came out.

And I guess maybe you could sat it doesn't make her "right". They are both kind of right. It shows that Kanye cleared some of the lines with her, or versions of them, but it also vindicates Swift that Kanye never mentioned he was going to call her a "B", which was what her concern was kind of about.

Anyway, it's all drama from the past. My main point was that right now in the present I think she's far from a heel in pop music.

She can write a catchy tune and is pretty easy on the eyes and has turned that into a fortune. Add in that she isn't afraid to use that fame and fortune to help shape America by encouraging a generation to get out, make waves and vote.

All in all she is a great American success story

Good on her.

You often see celebrities have this arc. Jennifer Lawrence is a good example. Around 2012, it seemed that people couldn't get enough of her. Then she got a little overexposed and her act became sort of annoying.

Well Kanye has been a heel of that world since right around the time he grabbed the mic from her at that awards show (to be fair, he had done ****** stuff before this, but that was the moment that pretty much everyone in society agreed he was an idiot), but I would say that after he came out about being bipolar most people just feel kind of sorry for the guy than actively hate him.


But here, this is TSwifts attempt to go dark. It's also hilariously bad.



I can appreciate a good heel turn, but that was just sad. Since then, she has come out with a more SJW attitude, but I got the impression (and correct me if I'm wrong here), that most people just thought she was kind of pandering with the songs.

I'm ride or die Taylor too but much pretty much everything she does has a co write or has an outright separate song writer. That said, she is my fav pop star and looking forward to her new album.

Listening to the new album right now, I give it a 6/10 about halfway through. Some catchy songs, good lyrics, but nothing that really sticks with you yet.

When I saw it was co-written by the guy from the National and featured Bon Iver, I can't say I was surprised that the mood was a bit more mellow.

I don't think this album is meant to be chock full of radio hits, especially since she wasn't even able to finish touring her last album. Just a small project done remotely during this insane Covid era.

Taken that way, I think it's a cool album.

She absolutely panders and that goes back to what I was saying regarding her coming off fake and calculating. For example, I think it's pretty clear she wanted to be a "gay icon" like GaGa, and tried to really cater to them with the last album and the sudden nosedive into SJW territory... Which is all good, I'm sure it worked.

That last album was pretty annoying though

New album is fire, and people saying she can't write a good song are uninformed or willfully ignorant. Speak Now is regarded as one of her best albums and it has no co-writers. If you listen to or watch any of the videos made about her songwriting process you will see that she is a creative force imo.

She's also now the first artist to ever top the pop and alternative charts at the same time.

Yeah to say she can't write a song would be pure ignorance. She's a pop star but would have a large song writing career on it's own. She wrote "Better Man" by herself for Little Big Time and that won about every award possible.

Really like the laid back vibe of the album. It was what I was expecting given the co-writing with Aaron and the visuals.

I was wondering how this would do critically since it's a bit of a departure, so I looked it up and DAMN it's at 96 on MetaCritic with 11 reviews including LA Times, Variety, Consequence Of Sound, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, NME.

I don't think I've ever sat down and listened to a Taylor Swift album or song by design. Not intentionally. I wasn't avoiding her so much as I think I had some assumptions about what her music would sound like. What I had heard randomly didn't offend me, but it wasn't something I felt I had to go listen to again.

Until this one.

Hearing about this album and seeing that Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner were involved got me on the hook to give it a listen, and I'm really glad I did. There's a lot of really great stuff happening on this album. "Cardigan" is an especially excellent song.

Anyway, don't judge it until you listen.
