Is there a real plan to remake it? I love that film and think it is a great time capsule of the era in which it was made. You know what though... I would be totally ok with a remake. While the CGI was revelatory at the time, it's hard for young audiences today to get past it.

There are definitely areas which could be improved upon, so it's not just a case of modernizing it. In the right hands, this could be real fun without negating the original. Best case scenario, this goes like Disney's Parent Trap. People still love the original with Haley Mills and have a soft spot for it, but the Lindsey Lohan one improved upon it in so many ways while reaching a new generation.

"Too che". Just watching with my kids and was admiring the music and trailer park banter. No way it could ever be done justice again. Terrible B movie stuff at times, but it pulls my heart strings and I would hate it to go through a terrible remake.

Ok with a remake.

Don't change the theme though. Amazing theme.

I'm against a remake. That movie has some intangible attributes (soul?) that won't survive a remake. Examples of this include Karate Kid and Footloose.

A remake has already been done. Ernest Cline wrote "Armada" and Universal is going to make.

*The book is terrible, so I can't imagine the movie being any better.

Not sure what it was but something about Catherine Mary Stewart in that movie made my early teenage pants get tight...

Why remake it when the original set up a sequel?
Alex is older now and is the new Centauri recruiting pilots. His younger brother, Louis, ended the original movie by playing the arcade so now Louis' kid is recruited by Alex after defeating the latest VR game.
Xur escaped in the original, so he's now the big bad that Alex has been hunting, but he needs new recruits to capture him at last.

OP,
No this is an example of a great movie that should be remade. Today technology allows this movie to go from Good to legendary.

Normally, you look at 4 factors to determine if a movie should be remade. Script, Actors, Special Effect and the music.
Movies that have all 4 should never be touch.. JAWS, Star Wars, Godfather, Gladiator, ect... these movies have it.

When looking at Last Starfighter, i would argue that it has a great Script but lacks in the actor w/ one exception, special effect and the music is pretty good. Especially the theme song.

Therefore it should be consider. Below is my breakdown of the 4 areas in more details.

Script: Great - only needs to be modernize.. instead of an arcade game.. it should be like a Playstation or X-box. The friends would be playing online .. each trying to be a starfighter pilot (Note: They should also make the game.. double win)

Actors: Only great actor in the movie is Robert Preston's Centari .. he was amazing in that role. However; I challenge you to name another actor in this movie without using the internet. Sorry Lance Guest but he vanishes from movies because he is .. well bland. Heck Wil Wheaton is in this movie.... never noticed until I looked up the cast in wiki today.

Special Effects: Yes they are 80's bad so modernize them. Today special effects, can really make the movie awesome.

Music: Ok the music is actually pretty good.. don't have to change it.

Overall the premise is about a normal kid with some abnormal ability who saves the day. Every kids loves this type of movie which is why it is was great.. but it can be better.

Note: Strongly support a fun sequel idea mention above.

On one hand, it would be nice to see more from this IP, on the other hand I don't think I can take much more incessant *****ing about something that doesn't live up to impossible expectations.

They'd eff up that very simple assessment. But I agree with you. Wouldn't even take much for them to replace the graphics in the original film either. I think Sony owns the IP though right?

1) You best put some respect on Dan O'Herlihy's name.

2) I think I read somewhere that Wheaton's scene was cut.

One of my absolute favorites as a kid. I wouldn't mind a reboot/remake/sequel at all.

Fun side note - Lance Guest played Johnny Cash in the Broadway cast of Million Dollar Quartet. He did a pretty good job of it too.

I actually talked to Wil Wheaton for over an hour once.

Nice guy, claimed Rutger Hauer was a dick and that Tom Cruise cannot act....

I read the book in about an hour on a flight and it was definitely written like a high school kid was the author. The plot was as dumb as the one with Harrison Ford and the skinny funny looking kid that defeats an entire alien race that is trying to destroy humans only to let the Queen survive.

Starship Troopers had an insanely stupid plot but the book and movie were at least campy fun.
