A federal judge has approved ending some long-standing anti-trust rules surrounding film distribution.

The original rulings in 1948 effectively ended the "old Hollywood" system of film distribution, preventing movie studios from owning theaters and establishing rules designed to prevent studios from extorting theaters into showing less desirable films.

There are a lot of different takes on this. The consumer who usually goes to large theater chains won't notice any difference. But it may hinder the distribution of smaller, independent films and also could limit the negotiating power of smaller theaters who may not have the capacity to block book films.
