Since the preliminaries are done and it has moved on to the main bracket, a spinoff on MuckRaker's THE GREAT MOVIE INSTRUMENTAL SOUNDTRACK TOURNAMENT. After some misunderstanding whether unoriginal instrumental music was allowed or not, I thought maybe a tournament of the best uses of classical music in film might be fun.. For example the use of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" in Apocalypse Now and Mozart's "Duettino- Sull'aria" from The Marriage of Figaro in The Shawshank Redemption. I'm not limiting to where classical music was incorporated into the story as with those two examples but even just part of the score such as 2001's use of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and Johann Strauss II's "The Blue Danube."

I might also consider other forms of music, particularly jazz but do not want to have the tournament overrun by modern popular music. Keep in mind the piece of music must not have been composed for the movie. It will be helpful you could provide a youtube link to the scene like I did above. Hopefully I'll get a good number of nominations to have a strong and diverse tournament. Depending on the the number of suggestions posted I'll probably do something like MuckRaker with a random groupings to eliminate and seed those that survive. G. Martin, no need to repost your suggestion from Groundhog Day.

Specific scene please. I can think of two off the top of my head in which parts of the Requiem are used. The more helpful you all are the more likely I'll use your suggestions.

Ocean's Eleven - Claire de Lune, Debussy (I believe this to be the single most beautiful piece of music ever written).

Platoon - Adagio for Strings, Samuel Barber

Raging Bull - Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana (had to look that up as I forgot the name of the piece)

Although I the rest of the movie I didn't care for, I always thought the intro to The New World, using Wagner's Das Rheingold: Vorspiel, was fantastic.

One our finest American Composers was Aaron Copland, I really liked how Spike Lee used his music from the ballet Rodeo in He Got Game

This scene from Carlito's Way features Flower Duet, a gorgeous duet by Delibes:

Trading Places - Marriage of Figaro, Overture, Mozart

Again specific scenes and possibly links to youtube clips will be most helpful. No need for these three Apocalypse Now - Die Walkure, Richard Wagner, 2001: A Space Odyssey - Also Sprach Zarathustra, Johann Strauss, Die Hard - Symphony No. 9/Ode to Joy, Beethoven since they are already done above.

Alien has a couple of classical pieces in its score:

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Mozart, which I believe plays during a quiet scene when Captain Dallas is alone prior to the facehugger dislodging from Kane's face

and

Howard Hanson, Symphony No 2, Op 30 "Romantic", which plays during the end credits

No problem, love the topic. I'm a huge classical and opera fan.

And sorry I did not mean to come across as impatient.

I just think the best way to do this is to tie the musical piece with the actual scene. For example, I love Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" and think such an airy piece in such a juxtaposition to the claustrophobic atmosphere of Alien makes it a superb choice but I can't find a clip of the scene so far. I might include Cinco Ranch's suggestion anyway but I think much of the brilliance of its use will be lost with just a clip of the music. Anyways, any help y'all can give me in will be appreciated.

The whole movie or do you have a specific scene in mind? Ulrich has already made a suggestion above. I have several more scenes that came to mind when the idea for this spinoff entered my noggin.

The rib and I joined the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus for the 2019-2020 season. We were scheduled to sing the 4th movement, in German, this past spring. Then COVID destroyed that. Hopefully we'll get to perform it next year.

The Planets are all such bad-ass pieces, and used in so many places that you don't realize.

Great nomination, which serves as a reminder, I do not wish to limit this to orchestral pieces composed long ago. I'm going to include "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter which is used as bookends for the beginning and end of Arrival.

As far as Master and Commander I am partial to the Aubrey/Maturin duet scenes
Concerto No. 3 'Strassburg' K.215, 3rd Movement - Mozart

La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid - Boccherini

I'm also going to include the use of Bach's Prelude, Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major for when the HMS Surprise arrived at the Galapagos.

So far a number of really good nominations. Keep them coming.

All I have been able to find is typically the music playing over a freeze frame image of the movie's poster art, or perhaps of the escape shuttle that Dallas was in for the scene in question.
