Yeah I'm a little torn on this but no doubt they killed it when it was based on the source material so maybe this is in their wheelhouse.

I can't wait.

Thinking about this some... and one of the good things is that there are a lot of scenes that would be relatively cheap to shoot, especially early on, and so they can go wild with the effects on the truly crazy stuff.

I read this series based off recommendations from this board and really enjoyed the first book.

I thought the second and third books were some serious slogs and forced myself to finish to see what the big deal was about. By the end I extremely disliked who became the main character and just wanted it all to end. Some of the big concepts were undeniably cool/interesting.

I actually thought disliking the main character was an interesting aspect of the books.

I hope they take the main concepts and drop some of the second/third book stuff.

I do hope they keep the Cultural Revolution stuff in. It doesn't get enough coverage in western entertainment.

I'm actually a little surprised they aren't making this in Chinese with English subtitles.

Well comparing anything to sense8 gives me pause, that wasn't singular as much as trash.
But everyone seems high on it, so ok.

Luo Ji is a bad ass character, IMO.

especially since the game of thrones goobers crashed and burned last time when the material ran out.

I really liked the first season of sense8.

Except for the hundreds of pages discussing his weird imaginary woman fetish. I don't make a habit of skipping pages of books, but I skipped entire sections of his chapters in the second book.

Loved him later though. I guess maybe that's the point of the early years portrayal.

I can't see Netflix keeping in all the fluff in these books, which should leave about a single book worth of source material. Definitely could clean it up and make it decent, and should make it one of the rare situations where the show is better than the books. At least IMO.

hope they stick to the trilogy and don't bother with the fan fiction 4th book

I really liked the first book. I buy a lot more books than I actually read, so I've been wondering about starting the next one.

I will say that the first book seemed much more like a vehicle to convey really cool sci-fi ideas than a masterpiece of storytelling. Maybe it's due somewhat to the translation, or just different cultural storytelling. (But the ideas were awesome, and I'm surprised he got away with trashing the Chinese government in parts)

I found the first book to be the least good.

Between the money Amazon was reportedly looking to put into this and Benioff and Weiss quitting Star Wars apparently for this, I expect it to be an epic multi season production.

I personally thought Dark Forest and Death's End were both better than Three Body Problem.

The first book takes a really harsh look at the cultural revolution (and has a couple snide comments about contemporary Chinese politics)

From the 80s on governments in China have denounced the cultural revolution, but these days no criticism of China past, present, or future is really allowed. I can't imagine an on screen version of those chapters would be acceptable under the Xi regime.

I don't think that the Chinese market is as important to Netflix as it is to Hollywood, but it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I can see someone liking the first book the most depending on what it is they like about sci-fi stories and books, but personally, I think it gets better as it goes.

I like that even during these massive set pieces, the story can still take the time to focus on the minutiae of a character. Some stories build like trains and by the time they get to the big set pieces they're just relying on the characters they already established and you don't really get that.

Maybe it was more for younger folks, but I tapped out when they had the virtual male female trans orygy.

Ooooooooh yes, that was weird...

So I don't know if this happens with y'all, but sometimes I like a show or a movie just for the effort. I think it's so easy to make things (movies especially, but sometimes shows) that are like solid base hits, but don't take any risks or don't bring anything new.

Sense8 was a little like that. Where I'm not sure I actually liked the show that much, but I really appreciated the effort and the attempt. I kind of felt that way about the Cloud Atlas movie also.

although i stopped watching, that was part of why i liked Preacher. that show was so off the wall and random, i couldn't help but enjoy the craziness.

Ah yes, those scenes. lol

My wife and I just finished watching the show. We typically won't watch a show if it feels like they're trying to use sex to get us interested in it. Even though there were quite a few sex scenes in sense8, we never felt they were used to "hook" us into the show. They were unnecessary, so we just used those times to check social media. Basically treating it like a commercial break.

Loved the story of the show. We're big fans of the Wachowski sisters though.
