I've watched several of this guys videos. He's legit(meaning he's very, very good).

This gives you insight as to how good SRV was. It's a breakdown of one of SRVs hardest songs.

Enjoy!

From the comments:

The reason Stevie Ray Vaughn could play like that is because he ate, breathed and slept playing his guitar. He would practice and practice till his fingers bleed till he got it right. He wouldn't even bath for days because it was all he had on his mind. How do I know this. My father Joe Bob Wilmore 'Jo Jo Gun' his best friend and bandmate from childhood.

Very cool!

If you love blues and SRV, you should check out the tribute band Texas Flood. They are based out of the Colony but play all over the state. I have seen them play a half dozen times live and they are great. Tommy Katona is the guitarist and singer and really channels SRV through his playing. This video is a few years old. They play a lot of other artists as well, not just SRV and have some great originals too.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Would love for these guys to come down to Central Texas/New Braunfels area!!!

Here's a great tune as well:

I think SRV is one of the 2 greatest players in history. The #1 spot undisputedly goes to Hendrix. I've always been amazed that anyone could decide to take a Hendrix original (Voodoo Chile) and make it better. Only the #2 player, SRV, could have done that.

I haven't watched the vid, yet, but it sounds like SRV's talent was more work than gift. Interesting.

You're welcome! They are all super talented and very nice guys. I'm sure they play down in your area regularly. This weekend it looks like they're in Houston.

If you're interested, check out their FB page. They live stream a lot of their shows and have a ton of full shows on there. During the COVID shutdown when their gigs were all cancelled, they were doing a lot of live stream shows from their rehearsal space to earn tip money. Some great stuff there.

Here's a link to one of their sets back in April, live but with no audience.

They also do some sets with all Jimi Hendrix songs which is also really cool. This is one show from May at Lava Cantina in the Colony.

I can't recommend them highly enough!

As a member of the Old People's Club, I was fortunate to have seen SRV up close and personal at least 30 times. Once in awhile he would play at Steamboat in Austin or The Armadillo World Headquarters (those were the days, lemme tell ya), and there was a tiny bar across the street from Steamboat whose name escapes me, where he would just do solo sets.

I always used to marvel at how thick his strings were, and how he would just manhandle them, and for a long time, in those small venues, you could pretty much get as close to him as you wanted. I would just stand there in front of the riser, mesmerized by what he could do with (and to) Number One.

I somehow still manage to remember 'most' of the important details about the show where he opened for The Clash at the Austin Coliseum. The first and only time I ever saw SRV get booed. It wasn't that he was bad, he was Stevie Effin Ray Vaughan even back then. It's just that the crowd wanted him to get off the stage so they could get down to Combat Rock.

In a roundabout way, this thread got me to thinking about all of the great venues that are long gone, where I saw some absolutely great music:

The Bronco Bowl in Dallas
Liberty Lunch
World Armadillo HQ
Austin Coliseum
Palmer Auditorium
Club Foot

Finally, I'm not going to get into a SRV vs. Jimi pissing contest, but I like SRV's Little Wing and Voodoo Chile better than Jimi's.

Great thread & video from Paul Davids. He looks to be a fun watch.

Since we're starting a pissing match between SRV and Jimi, I'll say I agree about Little Wing and Voodoo. If SRV had come first, he would be considered the best of all time. If Jimi had not come first, SRV would be the best, but he would have been a different player. I think the influence or inspiration was strong.

Finally, your description of seeing Stevie that many times under those circumstances makes me more envious than anything ever has on this board. I am a HUGE fan of Stevie. I've watched his videos several times a month for years.

If it's any consolation, I never saw Jimi live.

As to your statement about what his music would be like if SRV came first, I'm not sure. SRV cut his teeth learning from the likes of Albert and BB King, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Buddy Guy. I think he still would have been the same SRV that we know now. But what do I know, I'm just a dude with an opinion, and you know what they say about people with opinions.

Stevie did everything better than Jimi. So there's that.

There's a dude in Austin who does a pretty decent job with Jimi and Stevie. His name is Trent Turner, and he knocks around town, usually at Guero's, and also has gigs on the small stage in Luckenbach. I dig his sound.

I disagree. SRV was a more technically accomplished guitar player, but Jimi was a better song writer, more innovated and a better singer. SRV also wasn't very consistent in the recording studio. Almost every song Jimi recorded was great. SRV albums are very hit or miss.

Check out the album Strike Like Lightning by Lonnie Mack. SRV brought him out of retirement and played on the album with him. Lonnie was another big influence on SRV with his signature Flying V and Magnatone amp.

I always thought Chris Duarte was about the closest guitarist to SRV in terms of sound.
