I just got a synapses of this film. From what I am hearing, plot wise, it's the same film as #Alive, a south korean film.

A man is alone in a high rise, he is trying to survive for weeks alone, considering suicide etc, then he sees a girl surviving across the way in a highrise. They work to get together, they meet an older gentleman, etc. Its the same film.

Are we really that desperate for material? Did they buy the rights of the story or did they just steal it?

This is nothing new, it's been going on for decades. The Ring was remake of Ringu. The Grudge was a remake of Ju-On: The Grudge. The Hunger Games, although based on a novel series, was pretty much a rehash of Battle Royale. The Magnificent Seven is a remake of Seven Samurai. Star Wars was a retelling of Hidden Fortress.

Speaking of the OP, I watched #ALIVE last night on Netflix. I didn't think it was very good. Train to Busan is a better Korean Zombie flick.

Only seen the trailer, but #Alive sounds like it's "borrowing" from one of the chapters of the book "World War Z" about a Japanese hacker trapped in his high rise apartment during the zombie crisis.
