I've never read Goodbye to a River but you may check out Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers

It's a look at life in the Florida Everglades prior to the establishment of Everglades National Park and the subsequent development of the area. The author grew up in the Glades and spent the better part of life in the backcountry and he tells stories, shares experiences, and passes on knowledge he learned during his time there.

It's a great, quick read that I think falls in line with Goodbye to a River although the Florida version. Even if it doesn't I recommend giving it a read.

While not based in Texas, I am about to finish reading "A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold. Very similar conservationist theme, not as dark or history involved.

I think I liked Goodbye to a River because I hunt in Jack County and my friends have a place in Granbury. The book talks about so many places I have driven through and were familiar. I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much had it not been set where it was. Leopold's book is much heavier on nature and wildlife and much lighter on human historical stories. It is set primarily in Wisconsin but I have enjoyed reading it just as much or more than Goodbye to a River. I read them back to back in the past few weeks FWIW.
