Who else is watching this? (Showtime miniseries w/ Ethan Hawke as John Brown.)

I'm surprisingly impressed with this show.

Totally shut out - no responses

Anyways, finished the last episode. I thought it was really well done. Will probably read the novel written by James McBride.

I watched an episode and liked it but it seemed like a series that I would have watched on a plane in the before times. Not something I can casually watch on the couch while screwing around on the computer

Well, they did depict slave owners and they depicted very religious white abolitionists who were willing to die for the cause.

The portrayal of Frederick Douglas seemed very similar to the one of him in Glory, except the Douglas in Good Lord Bird got a lot of female action.

Something I learned is that John Brown was the first person executed for treason in US history . (Technically, it was treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia.)

It was definitely an interesting take. Ethan Hawke's performance was intriguing -- some of his best work of his career, IMO.

One of the things the folks heading the project also said was that it is difficult to tell a story like this without a good bit of humor -- given the rancor and divisiveness in today's society. I suspect that's the reason that Douglas' character had the shading it did (both serious and humorous).

The portrayal of Jeb Stuart's character was also intriguing to me as well.

Agree about the Stuart character, played by Wyatt Russell. Another reminder of how many CSA soldiers served in the US military.

I really enjoyed Lodge 49, which starred Wyatt Russell. Quirky series. Different from a lot of things on the tube.

Would probably not watch just due to Ethan Hawke being in it
