Really when I think of Alternative I think of the originals.... the punk/folk inspired REM, 10000 Maniacs, Violent Femmes underground (college) radio of the early 80s. They were heavily influenced by Velvet Underground and punk or post punk bands (Dead Kennedys, Clash, etc.)
Everything else is really more rock and groups like Sonic Youth, Ministry, NIN and Jane's Addiction then led to the next wave that included Grunge, Indie Rock, Post Grunge and Alternative Metal, etc.

The question itself is difficult. You should probably define "Alternative". In my mind, "Alternative" music is different from "Alternative" Rock.
Is Alt Rock just a new type of rock that displaces the current mainstream for something different? Nirvana was "Alternative" to what was commercial, at the time. However, would you say any grunge band is Alt Rock?
Is Punk Alt Rock? From there, how far along would you go and still call it "Alt Rock"? The late 70's Punk? The underground punk of the 80's? The pop-punk of the early to mid 90's? I would say the true reign of "pop-punk" would be in the early 2000's. So was it "Alt Rock in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, but mainstream in the early 2000s?
Again, I am no way a purist on any of this. I just think it's an interesting conversation. My formative years were the late 90's and early 2000's, so I love that music. Even the stuff on the radio I didn't much care for is far superior to what passes for "Alt Rock" today.
That is Wikipedia. I don't know how we went from something like this to calling Three Doors Down "Alternative Rock". That was commercial rock of the early 2000's. Not hating on them at all, just making an observation.Quote:

Three doors down is terrible, they are only alternative in the sense that they are a less sonically appealing option for people with functional ears.
