Based on Julia Quinn's novel series I have never read. Seems very stylized. Not sure if that was the way the books are, but from the trailers, a lot of the characters (many of color which wasn't the norm in early 1800's high society London obviously) and dialog seem to be modernized. It gives me a slight Leonardo DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet feel to a certain extent. It might be fun though. While I tend to like historical accuracy to period movies and shows, if well written and well done, I can look past all of that.

She's all that and Drive me crazy and 10 things I hate about you for Victorian London.
I'm sure it will be awesome.

Ya, I can see that too. This could be great and could be total crap no doubt. My wife loves anything period piece, and I like them too usually after I am convinced to watch. But I tend to like a movie that ends, like Jane Austin type stories. Don't know if I'll be invested enough to watch. But, I have been wrong before.

I enjoyed it, especially as something I could watch with my wife. It has a little bit of everything... fighting, T&A, romance, scheming... to where it wasn't just a straight chick drama

Tried to watch, lost interested. It just seems to contrived and dialog just didn't fit for 1800's England. IMO a historical period piece like this has to have a certain level of honesty/believability to it. Like you can't have GI's storming the beach with M-16's and modern tanks and planes flying around in Saving Private Ryan. Regardless of how good the rest of the production and how good actors and actresses may be, the glaring historical inaccuracy will always be front and center. Just my opinion and I'm old. Also, the pushy grandma just don't pull off the patriarch role the way Maggie Smith did in Downton Abby.

Wife is reading the books and was super interested in the series (not my cup of tea) She said the casting really took her out of it and made her lose enjoyment and was something she could just never get over. She still finished the first season but as someone that really likes period pieces, she said that, in combination with the style and musical choices, it really hindered her like of it. And she isn't someone that really cares about strict adherence to historical accuracy . I think she just likes to immerse herself in a shows world and a few things, mainly the casting, just kept taking her out of it.

So in the books is there a mixed race high society like in the show? They actually explained it in the show, so to me it is like an alternative universe in terms of race relations, etc. Which was fine. Agree that certain language and other things were a bit off for the times but overall an interesting story. I tried to keep up but my wife benched it faster than I could keep up. So I did miss certain parts. Did laugh about how this world has no ugly people, but it is a fantasy so...Jane Austen adaptations also lack "ugly" people too, lol.

Right?!?! Reminded me of some HS kid promising a girl he'll "pull out". Of course, in this case, she doesn't want him to.

i liked the series fine, but i enjoy english period pieces and have been wanting something else since Poldark ended, i like a bit of an irreverent take on the time.

the intimate scenes between the two leads were a bit too much for me. i felt like the camera lingered too long and was way too up in their faces.

that was way more distracting than modern music or taking liberties with races.

I've seen some people complain about the use of different races in Bridgerton and also The Great. I wonder if audiences complained when Shakespeare had men play women or when white men put on black face?

I agree that it's not that big of a deal that Queen Charlotte is black in Bridgerton.

Well, Queen Charlotte is reperted to have had black ancestry and is said to have looked it. Portraits meet at the time show her with black features and it is well known that portrait artists of the time downplayed what might be considered flaws in appearance.

This is all based on an article I read in an ancestry journal. I can't find it now but I look for it.

While that all might be true, the number of black actors in this period piece is out of the norm for the time. Again, I don't care but I've seen people ***** about it and also in The Great.

Does anyone know what the note was about that Mrs featherington got at the end?

She said the man who will inherit the Feathering estate? What's that mean?

100% soft core porn. The Duke was a borderline dumbass - I called him the "Black Poldark". Overall fun show. I assume there will be second season where we see who takes over the Featherston peerage - not that there is anything left other than a name.

Lord Featherington was killed and the estate and his peerage will be inherited by someone. I'm assuming sincehe has only daughters that the next male heir will inherit.

Like others, I started it with no expectations and enjoyed it. I actually stayed up late watching because I wanted to know what happens. I'm glad to see there is a second season starting filming this year.
