Anyone check this out? Story of a addict metal drummer played by Riz Ahmed who suddenly loses his hearing and copes with the life changes and struggles of being deaf.

I watched it the other day and really liked it. It's a slow burn type watch but it's pretty good. It does a really good job of putting the viewer in the deaf world. Riz Ahmed was really good and nails his part.

Overall a good solid watch that I recommend

Saw it the other night. Agree that it's a good movie. Was curious to see how the main character would come to terms with his situation. He nailed the role.

Recommend it!

Was the metal any good?

Because I fully expected them to feature awful music which is why I didn't watch.

It wasn't metal. It wasn't punk. It wasn't rock. And it wasn't good.

I watched a few minutes then decided against it... not sure why.

- metalhead.

The metal/music part has virtually zero to do with the overall theme of the movie. More or less just sets the stage that allows for the character study of an adult coping with going deaf, adjusting, etc. So if that's the main pull for you to watch...don't.

I see what you did there.

Yeah there's maybe 1-2 mins of actual music being played.

I did notice during the credits that Ahmed was credited with performing the songs so I'm assuming he did actually play the drums. I thought that was impressive.

And yeah this isn't a movie about metal. It's about his journey post hearing loss and how he copes. Reminded me a lot of The Wrestler.

Again the best part of it was their ability to put you in the shoes of a deaf man. Multiple times I found myself thinking...Man that's rough and it really sucks.

Watched it last night with the wife. Few things:

1. It is a heavy drama with, as OP noted, a slow pace. However, the pacing along with the exceptional sound design are very effective and important to the delivery of the story.
2. Ahmed kills it for sure.
3. It is a bit of a bummer, so maybe don't watch it if you're having a rough day.

Recommend.

Bump because I cannot recommend this movie more!
My two favorite scenes, first dinner scene when Ruben is at the home. What an awesome snap shot to the deaf community. In fact that whole montage of his first week there was incredible. And then him on the playground. Very moving.
Who ever said this was like the Wrestler. Good comparison of the style, pace and filming.
On prime. Check it out

For those who have seen this, should I watch with closed captioning on? I've read that it was intended to be watched that way and then I read somewhere else that, from purely a filmmaking standpoint, that the sound design really captures what that experience may feel like so closed caption could take away from it. About to start it.

My wife and I watched if a few weeks back and thought if was really well done. We did not have closed captioning turned on and didn't feel like it needed it.
