I know Joel was only at tu for 9 months, but I can't help but watch these two clips and think he is making fun of A&M. Kind of flattering, really.

But in all seriousness, if you are being serious, I think your reading into it a bit much.

Random question for random thread. Do pairs like the Coen Brothers, Russo brothers, etc. each make a standard directors cut on each film, or do they split it?

The only Coen Brothers A&M reference I can think of was that movie Intolerable Cruelty where Billy Bob Thornton claims he went to Texas A&M. It's kind of fuzzy but I'm also remembering them playing the War Hymn in that movie. Could be confusing it with another movie, though.

Maybe ask A&M professor Dr. Redmon, or buy his expensive book: https://www.amazon.com/Constructing-Coens-Simple-Inside-Llewyn/dp/1442244844

My bet is that brothers like this usually have different responsibilities in the film. One or the other will have a stronger voice on certain aspects of filmmaking, based on their relative talent.

The directors cut would probably be just one cut, and the brother that was most involved with editing would probably be the stronger voice.

Just speculation. But, I have never seen two directors cuts of any film.

Did you know that Zack Morris went to A&M? I saw him at JD Wells all the time.

Redmon explains that the Coen Brothers' films demand that the audience participate actively in making meanings of the films. The films help viewers become better readers of cinema and of life, and offer us all clues as to how to find truth and emotional authenticity in the grotesque carnival of broken dreams and solipsistic concerns of an America fractured by the culture wars.
That's so weird, I was just saying the exact same thing to a buddy at the bar the other night.

I've had that book on my amazon Xmas list for the last few years. Something I kind of want, but would never pony up the $50 to buy.

love some of his rambling quotes

"john d. II the deuce we called him"

"the whole left side of his body is as useless as tits on a boar hog"

right near the end at 2:45

"i myself went to Texas A&M, I'm an Aggie"
"business"?
"Tight End. I had a fair amount of success against a split T defense. You see when they line up symmetrical that way it allows me to do a buttonhook, down and in, out and up, different things, post pattern every now and then, you know TE doesn't usually run a post but hell if the QB calls it I'm ready."

So, here we have a comedic foil who is nothing more than a tool be tossed around between two other people playing a complicated game involving both wealth and love, and he is expressly signaled as an Aggie?

No one on here seems to agree with me, but I think that there is more to this than anyone else does.

I don't think that Joel has a real beef with A&M, but I am still in the camp that he likes to slide in little side jokes about us now and again. Think of Disney and the tricks the animators try to get away with on the sly, or Pixar and A&M stuff they slide in.

The Muncie thing is pretty obvious, really silly college stuff.

I still can't help but see the KKK guys from oh brother as looking similar to yell leaders / A&M band.

They start with some nice hands waving in the air like the milk men, and eventually form a nice marching block T during their ceremony. I just can't help but see the similarities and chuckle.

I'm OK with thinking it's just me.

Are you overtrolling when calling the yell boys and the band "oh brother" kkk look-a-likes?
Band uniforms have ZERO similarity to klan robes, and if you think klan robes and yell boy outfits are similar I guess you see painters, restaurant chefs, navy whites, and wimbledon players all to be klan look-a-likes.

No, the uniforms do not look alike.

But the shaky hands towards the air wearing white, added in with the block "cross/T" during the march, looks like the same type of imagery.

Again, I'm cool with it being just me. I'm not trying to be offended. I'm really not even flattered that much. I do think it is kinda funny, whether intentional or not.
