This movie starring Gerard Butler was just released for home rental for $19.99 and on Sunday my wife was nursing a Christmas party hangover so I laid up in bed with her and watched it. I liked the movie much more than I thought I would since it is a disaster movie with a plot that has been done many times over (Extinction level event comet hurtling towards Earth). Unlike most of his films where Butler struts around punching bad dudes in the face, shooting terrorists with an automatic weapon, or gutting a Persian with a short sword he actually pulls off a movie with minimal ass whipping and quite a few really emotional scenes. Some parts of the plot were completely predictable but altogether pretty well done film that didnt have any lulls or cheesiness that some of the disaster movies have.

For a bonus Butler's wife in the movie is the insanely hot actress that played Dead Pool's wife

Yeah Morena Baccarin.
We like her.

Her only resume smudge is being Dana's mother on Homeland. To give birth to that spawn is pure evil.

HARD to believe there's no cheesiness. It looks like crap...and one of those movies I watch with my former roommate online so we can make fun of it!!

There is very little of the CGI disaster shots and no corny scene like the 14 year old kids getting married so one could get in bunker crap. The movie is mostly about human relationships in a world ending cataclysm event.

When I was in high school a couple of my buddies and I went to see daredevil in the theaters. It was so bad we made a pact to tell everyone we could that it was a great movie so they'd also go through the **** experience that we had to.

My point is....are you trying to daredevil us?

74% on Rotten Tomatoes so Im not the only one to like it. It isn't Citizen Kane or ET or anything but I thought it was one of the better recent disaster flicks.

Wait, isn't that the same as Deep Impact? Pretty much no CGI, relationships between people, blah blah.

It was entertaining and not too cheesy. Reminded me of a good 90s movie.

Is there at least super bad science and huge leaps in logic and common sense?

GEOstorm
The Day after Tomorrow
San Andreas
Hurricane Heist
2012

Loved these flicks because the bad science is easy and fun to pick out.

Question: does the world actually end or is there a neatly packaged ex machine end to the movie...?

PS; just saw the $19.99 price tag...this will have to wait until it is streaming for $0.00 somewhere...no movie is worth that $$, especially one with GB starring...

You guys are off the mark, the movie is about human relationships from loved ones to strangers when the world as we know it is about to end. This is a disaster movie of a different kind not a typical SciFi CGI devastation porn film. There are a few scenes of cities getting destroyed but not much and what you do see is from the characters watching the chaos unfold on the news.

The best scene for me was Scott Glenn as the grandfather saying goodbye to his daughter and grandson, very touching moment.

Somewhat... I enjoyed both movies though, decent watch, but not great. No corny attempts to actually prevent the destruction though. At the beginning, was a little suprised: how caught off-gaurd they were about the asteroid striking earth opposed to being small enough to break up. I get why the government(s) would want to cover it up, but I would suspect some amature astronomer with an internet connection would have broke the news

Probably the biggest surprise movie I've seen this year! Wasn't expecting much from it but it had me locked in. Woulda been fun at the theater.

That and the smudge that she's kind of a cheating hoar who got herself knocked up by a co-star while married to another dude. But then again, that may actually be in her favor.
