I saw this blowing up with praise on Twitter the past week, then had multiple people reach out and personally recommend it, all of them saying the exact same thing... Don't read a single thing about it. Don't watch a single trailer. Go in as blind as you possibly can.

So that's exactly what I did this weekend.

And it was truly one of the most mind-blowing and strangely emotional things I've ever seen.

Seriously. As soon as you possibly can, watch this. It's an hour and thirty minutes. Don't Google it. Don't read or watch anything. And then we need to discuss, because holy crap...

Edit to add: There are *** SPOILERS *** below, so don't read past this post until you've seen it.

It's like an emotional magic show and I have NO IDEA how he pulled any of it off. Especially the letters.

And how he knew everyone's cards at the end. That was SO DAMN COOL. Telling everyone I know to watch it.

I'm guessing they targeted one person when they bought the ticket to the show. Contacted their friend/family member and asked them to write a letter. Copied the letter 10 times so they'd "choose" it during the show.

Knowing everyone's card at the end is either a photographic memory or ear piece.

So this is legit?

was this a movie about a "Broadway show"?

Or a real life Broadway show that was highlighted with its own feature film (so that the rest of the world could experience the "amazing-ness" of the real life show?)

I too saw the massive heapings of praise for this, and decided to give it a go last weekend. I had no idea what it was or what to expect. I thought his tricks were cool, but the show was too slow for my taste. I just didn't know what the hell the point was or where we were going with this. Very good messages / back story on the trick set ups. I didn't find it as profound as it was billed. I'd give it a B.

That was enjoyable. Nice to go to a "show" after not being able to.

Thanks for posting. I remember reading about the show when it was just a live show and thinking it sounded interesting. Glad I got to watch that. It was incredible. Can't imagine how cool that would be to actually be in the audience. I love that kind of magic and the message and storytelling were also great.

Was that really Bill Gates?

Great to hear.

Yeah, I noticed Bill Gates, Tim Gunn (balling his eyes out), and W. Kamau Bell in various audience shots.

There were quite a few celebrities in there. David Blaine was the one who he said "My brother" to, and he started quivering/crying after.

The woman he whispered his answer to is also a "celebrity" of sorts - she's the one who makes the cakes that look like dead people that all the celebrities eat. It's freaking weird. I can't remember her name but she's well known.

I agree. Cool tricks, but I felt it would be more profound. The beginning of the show set up a problem about how we view ourselves and the show never really solves it.

We watched this Friday night not knowing a single thing about it other than a friend suggested I watch it. It fell flat on my fianc but I thought it was fascinating. As someone that's struggled with identity and being it really struck a chord. Beyond that, I thought the story telling + "magic" show was well done but the content as a whole is what got me.

Incredible show. The Rouletista story was so incredibly unnerving and made me think of what is my metaphorical gun to the head. The letters and the identity stuff was just incredible

Also, "My Brother" David Blaine. (Oops, Chris above already mentioned him.)

Enjoyed watching this. Wish I could've seen the play live. Think the brick was easy to pull off, but everything else was riveting. Thanks for recommending.

A lawyer did a variant of this to our jury pool once. That was a weird selection process.

That was crazy. Definitely an emotional trip back and forth between heartfelt and "huh?."

Since we're naming celebrities, Jon Lovett of Pod Save America was there. Deray Mckessen who's an activist and podcaster. Larry Wilmore was in there as well

Not sure what to think. He's clearly a skilled magician with the slight of hand and card mechanics. I thought having the obvious celebrities cheapened it a bit.

A bit too long and slow at times but still fascinating.

I assumed the card naming is a trick of one of those rare people that can memorize like crazy and he watched them all grab card (or saw a photo album of each person as they grabbed the card.

His card tricks reminded me of Ricky Jay - so cool. Start around the 10 minute mark for a display of Ricky's card cutting and shuffling skills.

Seriously though, at your recommendation I watched with my wife (who I wouldn't let look up anything about it) not knowing anything and afterwards she said "I could have saved you 90 minutes, I know you hate one man plays and magic."

I watched this last night without knowing anything other than what was posted in the OP. He is very slick with the cards, and to me the illusions undermine what he does at the end. I kept looking for an ear piece or some sort of signaling device. I was out of the emotion of the moment because I was trying to figure out the trick. He is a good story teller, but I may need to watch it again and try to figure out what his actual message was. Is it to define yourself? Or have someone write an ending for you based off their incomplete information?

There is some deeper meaning, and then it turned into the worlds slowest paced magic show.

Can't really judge it as good or not...the magic has been done by others a million times, but the overall message was interesting.

The letters had mother, father, friend, sister, brother, etc. written on the back. He pointed it out. You would have to get a letter from a lot of different people, all tied to that specific audience member.

Yeah I really enjoyed the tricks, but wasn't really into the introspective story telling aspect. I didn't really understand the emotional aspect to any of it other than the reading of the letters.

Watched it a couple nights ago and enjoyed it. The storytelling and his work with a deck of cards were the best parts. Even though it was his central theme, I thought the whole "I am a..." thing was a little overdone. Still a good watch.
