I cannot say how many times we watched The Sound of Music when prepping for the show in HS

Damn good movie, IMO. Very smart, which is my favorite kind. I assume it's based on a Steven King book since they mentioned Shawshank prison. I haven't read many King books, but if that book is like the movie, then it's one of the few of his that I think is really intelligent. I put it up there with Jackie Brown (which I think is Tarantino's most intelligent movie).

Highly recommended.

I'd have assumed he died 30 years ago. Guess I thought he was lot older.

Hard to be overly sad at his passing. The guy lived an incredible and full life. (that is not meant to be a slight, so no need to be defensive about that comment).

  • The guy lived to be 91.
  • The guy had a career spanning 60 years.
  • He was acting up until almost the end of his life.
  • Was universally lauded for his acting his entire career doing some of his strongest work in his later years.
  • EGOT winner.
  • Got to be a Klingon and fake-married to Julie Andrews.
  • Married numerous times, but had been with his third wife for 50 years.

His only fault is that he was Canadian. but no one is perfect and he could not control that.

He was one of the post-Golden Age greats.

May we all go out so well. Cheers to him.

He is the classic scene stealer in the opening of national treasure. But i just found out that wasn't him singing edelweiss and now its all just been a big lie.

I only knew him from Knives Out, but subsequently found out he had been in so many great roles I've never seen. He was fantastic and charming in Knives Out.

Do you think the movie is merely ok? Or pretty good?
I thought it was great how at the beginning they do a damn good job of convincing we viewers that Deloris is guilty as hell, but by the end we are convinced she is innocent of both murders. I think it was really well done.

If the movie followed the book and you thought the book was meh, then i assume you would find the movie meh too. I usually think movies suck compared to books. So if this is like that, then i would think you would hate this movie. To me that's hard to imagine, since I think it's pretty darned good.

I can see how you would be disappointed if you are a Steven King fan and went into the book thinking it would be like his horror books.

Well, I just thought it was ok so maybe I wouldn't like the movie but I would give it a shot. I've read every King story he ever wrote up until his accident, so I wasn't surprised it wasn't horror. I just wasn't thrilled with it.

Haven't read much of his work written after his accident for some reason. I think once I finished The Dark Tower I basically moved on from him.

Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp he was my first crush. My parents had to buy TSoM on VHS three times because I watched it so much as a kid. He was so damn handsome!

A lot of people have that opinion. Plus, he quit doing coke which fueled much of his most popular stuff earlier in life.

Last thing I read of his was his non-autobiography called "On Writing". It's really good. I say that because he adamantly declares it's not but it really kind of is.

Got his Oscar later but isn't it a bit of a shame he was not even nominated for Sound of Music???

10 nominations for the movie and he didn't even get a supporting actor nomination.

Seemed like an oversight to me. He was integral to that films success and quality imho.

All of his Oscar noms were for films in 2010 and later years. Crazy.

I don't share that opinion at all... there was what I would call a dry period in there for sure. Probably for a good 10 years after the accident. I'm sure some people stopped reading him then and have not gone back like you.

But some of his later stuff is really great again - maybe not his best ever but up there. I'd put these all in his top 20 books.

2011 - 11/22/63 is really really well done also a miniseries on Hulu.

2013 - Doctor Sleep excellent follow-up to The Shining also a movie now.

2014-2016 the trilogy of books: Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch were really great - also a TV series on Audience Network with Brendan Gleeson now on Peacock also.

2019 - The Institute is really good sort of has elements of things like Firestarter+IT but a unique story.

Yes, we actually have 11/22/63 and The Institute because my wife bought them. I'm sure I will read some of his newer stuff and am intrigued by The Institute.
