Drank tequila all day yesterday and was up late and bored. Decided to watch this. It's been several years.

This is a bizarro movie for those who have not seen the original. Very near dystopian future as society is clearly in the process of breaking down. There are still people trying to live and do normal things, but this movie almost seems like the last 48 hours of somewhat normal society before complete and total anarchy and lawlessness sets in.

Maybe that was the intent by George Miller; never read much about his thoughts on the film. I think that's what makes this movie interesting because it really feels like you are watching the final moments of the last breath of civilized society.

A few other random thoughts:

  • I want that red wagon. Such a badass vehicle with the scifi mural and mag wheels.
  • Mad Max being mad is actually very little of the film..
  • Shotguns seem to be the weapon of choice. I presume that is because other weapons may not have been readily available considering Australia's gun laws?

It was my favorite of all the mad Max films for just the reasons you mentioned.

I'm pretty sure that this movie was filmed before the massacre that resulted in the gun restrictions in Australia.

I know it's never outrightly confirmed but isn't there an implication that Goose is the Great Humongous or that more specifically The GH was Goose before the ending events of Mad Max ?

I've never heard that and didn't see any ties to it in the movie. Could see why some speculate on it though. Their builds and kind of similar character in how they talk and act.

From my understanding that was the case in early drafts of the script but at some point Miller decided to go in a different direction but certain elements of the first draft carried over leading fans to speculate that they were one in the same.

Watched it a few months ago myself after not having seen it for probably 30 years.
I know it was groundbreaking for it's time but for me it just didn't hold up. It was a real slog for me to get through the whole thing.

I agree, but all the sequels hold up...

I may be in the minority, but I thought Beyond Thunderdrome was pretty weak compared to the others.

I don't think you are. I'm pretty sure that's the consensus.

It sets up Fury Road (if you believe it's a sequel and that Mad Max in Fury Road is the feral child from The Road Warrior, which I do)...

I'm blanking...is he even referred to as Max in Fury Road?

I don't recall if they say it in the movie, but the character IS called Max Rockatansky in the credits/IMDB.

Never heard this theory, nor got that vibe when I've watched Fury Road. Interesting. Not sure whether I like that idea or not.

Look up some YouTube videos about it, it's real. He has the music trinket that the original Max gave him in part II, he also doesn't speak much ('Cus he never learned to talk good), and a few other things...

If you're a fan, look up a few short videos...

Originally, my understanding is that it was a fairly run of the mill drive in movie, not unlike many others based around nice normal families being terrorized by bikers. Mad Max did not receive wider release or worldwide notoriety until after the Road Warrior or maybe even Thunderdome.

The apocalyptic theme for the sequels was developed after the gas crisis.

Again, that's just my understanding from stuff I've read in the past but don't feel like looking up again.

Max is Max. There was a comic series that bridged some of the gap between Thunderdome and Fury Road. It explains how Max got the parts to rebuild the V8 interceptor.

I think it's clear that George makes the movies pretty standalone. I know there are things that explain the timeline, but when asked were Fury Road (the greatest action movie ever made) falls in the timeline, George's answer included something like, "If I HAD to pin it down..." I think he just makes Mad Max movies and doesn't worry so much about continuity.

When push comes to shove I just don't know if he'll even be able to make the Furiosa prequel because the events are too well established before and after it. Doesn't seem like his jam, but maybe he just loves her character so much that he can get it done.

Then explain how the raccoon kid in Thunderdome has the face paint of the crew in Fury Road? Because the raccoon kid was the origin, the genesis of that gang... because they're all sequels.

I liked Fury Road just fine but

Eh? I've got a couple of Indiana Jones movies plus this movie where a cop from New York takes out a bunch of Eurotrash in a Los Angeles skyscraper holding on line 1.

John Wick says hello.

I like Fury Road, especially that they saturated the color. It seems like most post apocalyptic films use washed out color. This was a nice change. Also, using practical effects as much as possible was a good call.

I can't remember - was there a thread when Hugh Keays-Byrne died? Pretty cool to have played two different villains in these movies.
