Can tell you how many years it's been since I actually watched this show. But of course, being home bound today, I caught some of it. Are these real contestants or is this stuff scripted with a bunch of terrible actors?

I haven't watched regularly since the Bob Barker years but the contestants that get to "come on down" are generally hardcore fans that are prescreened while waiting in line and those that want to make it on stage know that they need to fit a certain trope which is probably why some of it feels like bad acting vs genuineness.

I'm sure that's right. It just seems they are coached to act the way they do. It's hard to watch.

You've got it backward.

They're not coached, they're just selected for traits that look like they've been coached.

My conspiracy theorist cousin said it's only old people, military, and college students they pick to come up. His theory is they pick people who can't pay the taxes on the prizes and they keep all the stuff.

I was in the audience in 2015.

Everyone there is screened by a producer as you wait to get into the studio. This is about a 3-4 hour process where you're just waiting in line with your nametag and a number. They'll ask you about where you're from, what you do for a living, how long have you been a fan. People were acting overly excited, but I guess that's what they look for.

When you finally get into the studio a producer will check your number and, if you've been selected to make it to contestant's row, they'll guide you and your group to some taped off seats. You've probably noticed whenever they call someone down they're running down from near the back of the studio and not in the first couple of rows because, well, that'd be bad television.

You also can't hear the announcer call the contestants' names for crap, so they have to hold up a sign with your name written on it. That's why sometimes it seems like a delayed reaction when someone comes down.

Also, Drew Carey really likes to party. He tells stories during the commercial breaks and set changes.

My parents were on the front row, stage left. (They actually got some considerable screen time because the guy (row 2) behind them got picked and won the whole thing. My folks were in line with him and his wife so they chatted a while. He was a retired engineer from Canada that was a small batch home brewer.
Think that pick was random? Yeah, me either.

All game shows are like that now. You need to be extra which is annoying when everyone is doing it. Wouldn't be surprise some are really extra to get their 15 minutes.

didn't that guy have some weird fixation on one of Bob's beauties?

My grandmother and I used to watch the hell out of this when I was a kid. And then she would make homemade fried pies. Pretty good day looking back on it.

Nothing beats that moment on the Price is Right when one contestant bids like $30,000 too much on the showcase showdown and the crowd goes completely quiet.

I watched this show so much as a kid in the late 80s. I could pretty much nail all the prices. Cars were always in the 8-10K range.

I refered to the Foxworthy gameshow as "Are You Smarter Than a Gameshow Producer?" Play dumb to get on, then run the table.

An acquaintance of mine won back in 2009. He wasn't scripted, but he definitely fit the "theatric" good-for-
TV vibe. (And yes, he's super gay, if that's not plain from the video.)

One of my friend's wife was on it back in the early 2000's. She won a Pontiac Grand Prix. She actually posted a year or 2 ago that they were giving that car to their son because he just turned 16. I don't know any details of how or why she was picked, but she does seem kind of annoying.

The trailer for the documentary mentioned earlier. 'Updating spreadsheet' is kind of a texags meme but this dude really did it. Built a damn price is right simulator and put his spreadsheet into it.

The fakeness of tv shows made me remember the time as a high schooler my friends and I were at a MTV's TRL taping

Choir trip to NYC in spring of 01. We ended up going to TRL in Times Square and getting to be the audience. They lined us up to file in and as I got closer to the producer I noticed they seemed to be deliberately routing my classmates to different sets of risers. At first it seemed random but then it became painfully obvious. They were arranging us in order of physical appearance. The best looking ones right behind where the host would be...the ok looking ones to the side of that where the guest stood and off to the side, never really on camera were the worst looking. Really awkward.

I don't think anyone claims the picks to be random.

Exactly. It's not random, but it's also not scripted or fake (other than the fact that you are more likely to be picked if you act insanely energetic during the auditions and when the producers ask you a question).

I was randomly watching the Price is Right and watched this episode live. I thought it was so bizarre that Carrey barely reacted to a perfect bid on the showcase showdown. I haven't watched the documentary, but this long form story about it was pretty good.

I know it's not random. It was the couples' third time on that week and the husband dropped the beer nugget on the producer: Come on down!
My parents did confirm "assigned seating" but I thought it interesting that a guy placed on the second row got "picked."

Large groups (15+) that buy tickets ahead of time someone from their group will get called. That's why there are always groups in matching shirts.

The rest the screen as said. Military personnel, cheerleader types, men that look like they would have no clue, and a few other types get called to fill out the rest.

We got tickets way in advance. 15 of us. Someone got called both days we were there.

On a similar note, another guy who figured out the system with Press Your Luck.

I watched it again for the first time this morning. Drew Carey (or whatever his name is) is either bored as **** or stoned out of his mind. He literally has no expression whatsoever. I'd rather they re-vamp it like the Feud did and bring in somebody like Kevin Hart to take over. Let him try to spin the wheel to see if he can get it around once. Bring in new hot hoes every week so he can comment on them the whole time.
I hope I did not offend anybody with this post. If I did, please come see me at my address in my profile so we can talk.
