Are gay characters over-represented in Netflix films?

I noticed a surplus of homosexual characters in a lot of movies I've watched on Netflix, many of them movies made for Netflix. Figure 10% of the population is gay, I noticed I was seeing it in a lot more than 1 in 10 movies, so wondered if writers are making up for a lack of representation by overdoing it.

It also occurs to me that I tend to watch movies that make it into the top 10 viewed, because I'll check those and see if I like the trailer, and watch it if it seems interesting. Maybe one of the reasons these movies make the top 10 is because the homosexual demographic watches these movies because they're represented, and that pushes these movies into the top 10?

So are gays over-represented in Netflix films, or is it just a quirk of the ranking system that causes a lot of their top movies to have gay characters, which means they're viewed more?

If 10% of the population is gay, then your measuring stick is 1 in 10 characters, not 1 in 10 movies.

I don't think gay characters are over represented, but interracial couples definitely are.

Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

I'm just noticing a lot of gay characters in movies recently, and the way they show they're gay is by putting them in relationships with other gay characters. So it's minimum two characters per movie. Their love always features at least one gratuitous sex scene, often taking away from the movie.

Think of it this way, they were underrepresented for 70 years and now they're making up for it.

Only in advertising. It's just comical to me how every other commercial right now has an interracial couple. It doesn't bother me in the least, but it's so obvious that this is the trend du jour for advertisers right now.

Interesting.

I used the 10% figure because I've seen it when Googling once or twice in the past.

Fit, attractive people are also over represented.

But ambidextrous people and more often left handers (aka hands-gendered) , who clearly choose their handedness to be flashy and stick it in our right handed faces are the most over represented.

I've always assumed that, no matter what percentage of the population is gay, it's a much higher percentage in the drama club. That's going to be reflected in cinema.

Real manly men like Rock Hudson would get to play big burly gay characters today if they wanted to, and probably encouraged by millennial doofuses who think it's edgy and cool.

There is no way in hell the percentage is 10%. I suspect it's 5% tops, but most of them you would not know by seeing them or interacting with them in normal situations. The percentage of "obviously gay" (where you know through normal interaction) has to be something like 1%. Not 10% as it's shown on TV (or 80% on Survivor).

The answer is yes, they are way overrepresented in all media now. They're really about 1% of the population, along with some confused and marginalized kids who are trying it out because our depraved media pushes it as a trendy thing. The media is now going to shove atypical relationships, fat people, ugly people, angry hairy legged *****es and any group that can claim victim status down our throats with a vengeance. This is the pendulum going way to far the other way after depicting too many unrealistically attractive, successful, happy normies for decades.

Saw that one, liked it, thought the depiction of Kevin Nash was hilarious, the relationships did not take away from the plot line.

I read the reviews on Amazon after watching the movie, apparently I'm in the minority because I was not offended.

It also means all homosexuals who said, "We just want to go to work, make a living, and live our lives in peace like everyone else" were lying their asses off. Because apparently being free to live their lives isn't enough, they need 'representation'.

I remember reading where one person asked, "Do you have any idea what it is like to see every single gay character in a movie die? Like that is what is going to happen to you in your life?" when discussing the 'kill your gays' trope. Some people have difficulty discerning the difference between fiction and reality.

You can pretty much assume most movies these days are going to have an obviously gay character. Doesn't affect me, so I don't really care. As mentioned earlier, we are talking about people coming up through drama, and I'm sure the ratio of gay to straight in that arena is much higher than the general population, but that may just be me making an assumption.

I also agree it is comical how many interracial couples we are seeing these days. Hell, I'm the product of an interracial couple, but it is very obvious.

I also find it funny that the majority of gay characters I tend to see are not just gay, but flaming and flamboyant. It's not just some dude you're following and then it just comes up that he happens to be gay, which I also find hilarious. Feed into the stereotype!

I will also throw out there, if you want to write a story and make your characters gay, good on you. It's your story, do what you want to do.

I hate this rage from minority groups when someone doesn't include "representation" in their story. Why does any artist need to be obligated to do anything with their art?

It's why I didn't care that Hamilton only had minorities. I think the sad part is when the shoe is on the other foot and everyone's in an uproar because there aren't enough minorities or under represented groups in a story.

Now, I think it's sad if production companies start requiring representation in stories to even adapt them to the medium

Sounds like the gays just organize and lobby better. Have you guys considered some type of rally to unite the right?

I'm ready for this trend to end:

I watch TV and movies to escape. If I wanted to see ugly people, I'd just go outside for a while.

I think you all might be slightly overestimating the 'agenda' aspect of this. It's a known, scientifically documented fact that women love stereotypically outrageous gay guys in sitcoms etc. Almost every woman you know had that special gay friend in high school - who she's sure was gay because he never asked her out - and thus she's an ally who understands them. Those chicks are being targeted as much or more than any other demographic.

"Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" wasn't really made for straight men who want to dress like clowns but don't know how.

So are "good stories" and "interesting characters". I mock "serious" shows where everybody is a smoke show (like CSIs and crap like that), but I'd be far less likely to watch a sitcom if everybody was fat and ugly. Why subject myself to that?
