I still remember walking over to Marooned to pick this up on release day. Must've listened to it a hundred times that week.

A true classic album.

Great, great band. Saw them in 84 or 85 at Numbers in Houston. I played Murmer so many times the vinyl wore out, then bought another copy. Later bought the cd.

I spent my whole time in Aggieland full of jealousy for not having been three years older and being able to witness that.

Yep - it was 89 or 90 and for some reason it was their only Texas date. My brother and his friends from Austin came in town to go with us, show wasn't even sold out, and were able to get tickets on day of. Good show. Stipe was his usual weird self.

I worked that show.

Once again, being the only female working for Rudder theatre was really useful.
I got to set up their dinosaurs on stage, steamed their clothes, and fetched them whatever drink or food they wanted.

It was I think October of 89.
I was a freshman at the time

But it was not the only Texas date of that tour.
My HS bf took me to see them at the The Summit in March of that year. On my birthday

I remember hearing about the A&M show in the Fall of '89, my freshmen year. I remember thinking 'who are these guys and what's so great about them? They don't even have long hair.'

I was more of a Guns n Roses / Poison guy back in the day.

I'm sure you're right - I guess what I remember is they weren't playing in Austin that tour but instead were playing College Station - which made zero sense.

I really liked their next album with Man on the Moon, but never listened to this one other than a few songs. I'll need to give it a whirl.

IMO, The worst part of the album is the first song's intro and outro . The purposely cheesy happy shiny people is not everyone's cup of tea.

100 percent disagree. The opening track just exudes 90's to me. It's a great buildup to the album..."The world is collapsing around our ears..."

I like that part, just not the annoying talking before it, and the scream at the end. Ruins the song for me.

Oh man, Automatic was mindblowing. What an amazing follow up, and my favorite of theirs as a lot of people state.

Was that a Town Hall show? I joined TH in 91, got to work some great shows including Toad the Wet Sprocket (with Gin Blossoms opening!)

Great times

They produced a new sound when they started. Radio was either Van Halen & Boston, or you had disco being replaced by danceable New Wave and there was the softer radio-friendly Doobie Bros & Eagles style. These 4 dudes had a completely new sound.
And it's not like any of them are/were individually world-class musicians. None of them I'd consider a star; but the 4 of them together were dynamite. They probably knew this as all their songs were equally-credited to all four (Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe). And that sound definitely changed after Berry had to leave.
My 2 favorite albums were Murmur & Automatic for the People. Something mysterious yet catchy that invited multiple playbacks on these 2 albums. I suggest listening to the Chronic Town EP if you haven't - 1,000,000, Wolves/Lower and Gardening at Night foreshadowed the sound that was to come on Murmur. Obviously, I was a big fan.
