It's hard to put this on the timeline of Phil's development. Sure, it's early in the process, where he is still pretty cynical, but is this after he stopped trying to kill himself?
By the time he drove the hedgehog off the cliff, you were already starting to see him get a little more comical about his spot in life.
It would just be weird to fit this into the timeline, I guess.
If you have a suggestion of where in the movie to fit it in, I would be interested in hearing about it.
