So my oldest loves theater with a passion and is also very talented. She has been in a couple of live productions herself. We have seen several family friendly shows at our local community theater. She has seen the 2001 movie version of chicago and loved it. Shes very mature at 11 and also very responsible for her age. Outside of keeping her room clean shes pretty much a perfect kid. All a's and is taking voice piano and guitar lessons and works her butt off on all of it. She loves the songs in cabaret but its clearly a very adult themed show. She really wants to go and i think she is mature enough to handle it but some people i trust think its a bad idea. What say you texags?

Sounds like you know your answer. You know your kid best.

It's a musical so it will be more symbolic than graphic. I would say Chicago is more risqu as far as dancing and dress goes. Probably more about what questions you feel like answering . From what I remember there are references to sex, sexuality, nazis, and the holocaust . I say go for it if she likes the music, overall the message is love is good, Nazis are bad .

thats pretty much how i feel. We are very open in our household and these are all subjects that we have talked about. Also since she is already in the theater world she is very comfortable and familiar with the theme of homosexuality. And yeah....nazis are def bad lol.

Not familiar with Cabaret, but generally with musicals, kids just enjoy the music and costumes and don't figure out the lyrics or themes until they get older. It's only awkward when they start singing really adult themed lyrics for older family members who get it.

I remember my sisters thinking Grease! was a fun family movie until they watched it as adults with their kids and were like, whoa....let's not sing that one.

I urge you to listen to the "people you trust". I personally agree with them as well.

Based on what you have described, if she really wants to go see it, then you not taking her will cause more long term damage and trust issues than any damage that could be done by you taking her.
