Starring Hillary Duff, presumably in which she talks to her kids about all the hook ups she had in her 20s/30s.

The original finale disappointed so bad. There was no freaking reason to kill off the mother and make the who thing a long winded wind up to asking out Robin again, they took the whole show plotline and flushed it in the finale.

I was perfectly fine with the mom dying. That alone would've been a great series ending. Running back to Robin ruined the show.

Holy **** it just clicked that THE MOTHER WAS CRISTIN MILIOTI! I was just raving about her (on this here website) yesterday!

Spoilers.

-Throw in the Barney/Robin relationship we watched for two years ended in about 10 minutes in the finale.
-Robin was alone with her career for 30 years, which is just pathetic for her character
-Marshall throwing away a year of a historic career for Lilly art and somehow losing the argument in the last season every guy waited for him to explode.

So much garbage on top of the obvious Ted storyline.

Hopefully, they have Hilary Duff hook up with Barney or Ted or the guy that his nose bleeds when he gets a boner one episode as a crossover.

Reading that article... what made HIMYM groundbreaking and innovative?
I thought it was fine, good at times, but I'm not sure about those two adjectives.

That article read as a bunch of insecure/unsure people trying to hype each other up, kind of like housewives trying to sell their multilevel marketing products on social media.

First several seasons were great TV. The common storylines and pieces throughout much of the show were so great. Then, they decided to just ruin it.

At least they have that alternate ending, which I consider the real ending, in my head.

Robin is definitely in my list of most overrated women.

This. Always seemed average by Hollywood standards. The way Ted pathetically fawns over her makes it worse.

CRISTIN MILIOTI is fantastic in "Made for Love", but I still think her best work was her guest appearance on "30 Rock"

Literally no redeeming qualities to her character. Not even a good personality.

It should have been Victoria, she was the hot one out of all the potential "mothers".

I enjoyed the show in it's original run, but I have no desire to revisit it.

It would have been the best story IMO.

She was pretty good looking until she had cancer.

Hot take. This show was not good, not even before the even worse finale, and the sequel is going to be bad. I've seen the entirety of the series several times due to an obsessive ex. Ted is every bit the ***** that Ross Gellher is. Marshall is a worse Chandler, the girls aren't as interesting as the Friends characters and the only redeeming quality is NPH's ability to play a straight man.

Some good takes here. Never heard the comparison to Friends put so aptly, but I WILL say this for HIMYM: as a setting, McLaren's Pub >>>> some coffee shop.

Strange series to rate, though. Overall I liked it, but when it was "off" it was damn near unwatchable. The whole last season was a slog. Barney was awesome, and a lot of the lighter episodes were perfect.

Here and there one of the better episodes would be on some channel, and we'd watch, but as a series it just misses the "let's rewatch this" threshold.

For mid-2000s network television, I suppose you could say it was relatively advanced at using non-linear storytelling, an unreliable narrator, and continuity. Not saying it's the strongest argument, but it's what I got.

That didnt ruin the show. The last four and half seasons ruined the show sans a few episodes

The mother dying was expected, the going back to Robin was expected. What they should have done is eliminate three years of crap, have a year with the mom and the group....and not finished it off in a hurry. It was poorly planned last few years and the only great aspect of the final season with Barney and Robin was we got a sneak preview of Cobra Kai

Yeah, I think the part that always bugged me the most about it was that we never got to know the mom. When she dies at the end, the emotional impact isn't nearly what it should have been.

as soon as they brought her back in the pathetic role after her walking out of wedding the storyline could never be undone after that. She wasnt the same character that left IMO
She was a great first season character that if it didnt get renewed would have been great to end with.
Seasons 1-3 and 2/3 of 4 were really good. The problem is it lasted 9 seasons and didnt have the storyline for that long at all.

it jumped the shark when Barney and Robin got together

I actually think Cristin Milioti is great and is my favorite of any of his girlfriends.

Edit: Also, she is so much more attractive than Robin, it's not even a comparison.

Definitely was a great scene, but not the peak for me.

Also love this scene; really, this whole episode. I think, hands down the best episode in the last season. Granted, that's not very hard to do. This one and "Bass Player Wanted":

I still rank it as the worst finale of all time for a popular show.

I've not watched a rerun once since they did what they did.

All the blue posts above, I agree with 100%. Just so many things they ruined in that stupid finale. And I'm also with you. After that, I never cared to watch a rerun. It's crazy for a show that I really liked that I swung to never watching another episode after the finale. It just ruined the entire show for me.

I tried watching it again recently and couldn't get more than a few minutes into the first episode. I really dislike laugh tracks now since I haven't watched a show with one in so long.

Barney is one of the top non-main characters in TV history.

I would say any scene that had Barney and Marshall in it together were the best parts of the show. I don't know if the Ted actor was just not good enough at it, but I never really bought him in any of the comedic moments of the series. Lily was also really funny, but her story line had her make a lot of dumb decisions that balanced it out back to just an ok character.
Robin sucked except for anything Canada related for the most part.

Someone said it earlier, but this show needed to end after 4-5 seasons, trim all the fat and this could have been an all-time great series. The season 4 finale would have been meeting the mother, and last season was us getting to see her in the whole group dynamic, then we actually care that she dies.
