Did the Devil really beat Johnny?

It has always bothered me that the Devil gave up so quickly against Johnny, especially since I like the Devil's solo a lot more than Johnny's. Johnny's may be more technically proficient, but the Devil's has more soul (no pun intended). Listening tonight, I've come up with a new theory that the Devil actually beat Johnny and that's why Johnny's solo doesn't really have much soul in it. Simply by getting Johnny to take part in the bet, the Devil had already won Johnny's soul. The Devil was happy to give Johnny the gold fiddle and tell him he won, because it fed Johnny's ego and tightened The Devil's grip on Johnny. In the end, it didn't matter who played better because the Devil had already tricked Johnny into giving up his soul.

You are probably right.

Risking ones soul in pursuit of a physical object.

You lose either way.

Hot take - the gold fiddle was what was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

Nah, Johnny's soul was not his to give. God owns it. I might buy into Johnny is a piece of excrement and God gave the Devil Johnny's soul. But anyone who overthinks this song is just spouting nonsense.

"The devil bowed his head 'cause he knew that he'd been beat".

Tells you right there. You've been reading too many books using an unreliable narrator as a plot device.

Possibly the best misuse of talent in country music history right here. Travis Tritt emulating a 3 a.m. Cinemax quality "the Devil" and Marty Stuart as Johnny making me want to punch him through YouTube 25+ years later.

It was never stipulated. Devil was smart and played a much better piece over all. Dumb ass hick boy Johnny allowed his ego to rule him and then was soundly beaten but allowed to think he had won. For which soul would you covet more? A dank, nasty defeated one or the tasty, proud and fiery one.

I know which one I would prefer.

Devil won twice over. Talent and deal.

None of this really matters when you realize the Devil and Johnny, and their bands are one in the same.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Johnny is bipolar and hallucinated the whole thing in his head during a manic episode
