One thing that always bugged me was they won their district and then that was it... No playoffs, no nothing

It bugged the crap out of me that they used the words "district" and "division" interchangeably.

The novel covers this. They lost the following week in the first round to the Dillon Panthers.

They filmed some of the scenes at the old Georgetown HS football stadium. The local radio station put a call for large numbers of people to show up at the stadium for the "game". They mentioned that filming would last all night and prizes would be given out during the night.

I believe filming started around 9:00 pm. They would film a football play, then take 20-30 minutes to move the cameras. During the break, they would draw a ticket and give something away like a stereo system. If you stayed until dawn, they gave away a boat and later a F-150 truck. I gave up at 2am and went home.

They also gave everyone a red shirt and had us sit in the south side stands for the scenes of the opposing team. Around midnight the had everyone leave the south side stand, turn in the red shirt for a blue shirt, and go sit in the north side stands.

One thing I remember us that they had Peter Guardere, former tu QB, play the part of actor James Vanderbeek (?) during the game. Guardere and Vanderbeek were on the sidelines throwing the ball around between scenes, and Vanderbeek couldn't throw the ball more than 25 yards. He was very unathletic, so they had to use a former college QB to execute the passing plays in the movie. It took Guardere 4 takes to throw a 40 TD to the end zone for one score. The WR is an actor (short white dude) whose name I can't recall, but was actually pretty fast and made some good catches.

They filmed some of it in downtown Elgin (the naked cop car scene)

Working at the Batt in the 1990s meant being around Olin and Robert Cessna pretty much every week for 3 years. I went to see Varsity Blues with 3 friends from A&M who had all been sportswriters like me. Just as the movie was starting, one of them said "You know I think Olin Buchanan has some little part in this movie."

Suddenly, there it was. A 40-foot tall Olin Buchanan head on the screen. The four of us started dying laughing and couldn't stop until several minutes later. It was years before anyone of us actually knew anything that happened in that scene and I'm sure the people around us thought we were all high.

Being a Georgetown HS senior football player in 1998, this movie could not be a more perfect time capsule for me. Including my actual football locker being in the movie.

It's also a very very dumb movie, but always worth a rewatch.

I played football for Wichita Falls High School, this came out my senior year of high school, and I'm 95% sure I read somewhere that they got the name "Coyotes" from our mascot. Texas Monthly named our school the number one Texas high school football program of all time, and the filmmakers apparently chose West Canaan's mascot because of that.

Also, for some inexplicable reason, West Cannan's fight song is literally the Aggie War Hymn, played at the opening pep rally. Go to the 6:45 mark and listen for yourself...

Needless to stay, as dumb as this movie is, and as poorly as it's aged, it still hold a special place in my heart for all kinds of reasons.

That's hilarious. I knew Olin a bit from working for the A&M football team when I was in school, and had no idea the was him for the longest time.

So cool. Between all of TexAgs, I bet we could come up with a ton of really great connections to this movie.
