JJ just confirms what we all already knew.

"You just never really know, but having a plan I have learned in some cases the hard way is the most critical thing, because otherwise you don't know what you're setting up.

I still think the first hour of The Force Awakens is some of the best SW content out there. It just kind of falls apart with the recycled superweapon.

I guess he learned absolutely nothing from his other projects that suffered from not having a plan. Wasn't that the biggest complaint about Lost?

EDIT to add: Also this is a complete failure at so many different levels of management above the director's head to approve a Star Wars trilogy without a plan for all three.

Someone should start a Star Wars thread so we can compile this sort of information.

The whole interview is worth a read. Not just the small quote and headline. They actually talk about Lost in the article.

He helped tear down maybe the 2 biggest franchises from my childhood in star trek and star wars, But he will get countless more gigs because he brings in young audiences at the expense of the fans who made the franchises popular.
So yeah, hate that guy,

I thought his first Star Trek movie was actually pretty damn clever with how it all got setup. My dad who was a huge Star Trek fan loved it

Agreed, and 3 was really fun too. It's just Into Darkness that fell flat for me.

Into Darkness was okay but the beastie boys stuff in the 3rd one is so bad lol.

First one was fantastic though.

I've tried numerous times to watch the older Star Trek movies. They bore me to hell.

Love the new ones.

Thanks JJ!

What will really twist your noodle is realizing that the young audiences he's attracting are the offspring of the original fans.

Me upon seeing the bolded.

Me upon considering the bolded.

Me delivering my opinion of the bolded.

I really enjoy watching most of the original ST movies. Loved JJ's first ST, meh on the second, and the 3rd was awful.

Completely disagree. That's the reason I like that one.

Hate needs to stay directed at Kennedy for mismanaging the new Star Wars trilogy. Ultimately its on her and the other people involved in the decision process. Even if I disagree a lot with the choices Rian Johnson made, it was enabled by her vision (or lack thereof)

Just gotta go watch The Mandalorian again to feel better about the direction of Star Wars.

Is it pretty well agreed upon now that the prequels were better than the these last three?

We should definitely hate a person because they didn't generate the movie we wanted.

To be fair, regardless of it's justified or not, you can hate what a person did without hating them.

Reminds me of that thread from a year or so ago about rating ST flicks - there was much fun disagreement

Top Tier
ST 2 Wrath of Khan
ST 1st Contact
ST Generations
ST (2009 flick)

Decent Tier
ST 3 Search for Spock
ST 4 Voyage Home
ST Into Darkness

Ehhh Tier (but will sit through it)
ST Insurrection

Bad Tier (will watch in a pinch)
ST Nemesis

Never Watch Again Tier
ST 1 (the standard against which all badness is measured - literally Ambien in movie form)
ST 5 and 6 (a waste of streaming bandwidth nowadays)

Rian Johnson indulged his personal preferences at the expense of a Great Franchise.

I've heard that he's generally a good dude, but Star Wars isn't the place to make a crap movie as some sort of meta artistic / political statement.

Therefore, it's unlikely that I'll ever watch a Rian Johnson movie if I know going in that he directed it. I've seen one, and it was an onanistic disappointment.

JJ Abrams appreciates the franchises, he's just not very good at realizing them. I fully trust his intentions as a guardian and proponent of the franchises he helms, but he turns out mediocre special effects-laden light shows, not great movies.

His Star Trek borrowed character names and superficial traits, but thematically had little to do with what I think of as Star Trek. TFA was the movie we needed, but TROS was a hot mess that didn't really deliver on any of approximately 6,000 story lines.

You're probably right. I don't think I'm being logical, but I would have a hard time enjoying an RJ movie.

After the sequel trilogy I was done with Star Wars- 100% done.

The sequel trilogy was disappointing but I do primarily blame JJ Abrams.

The Force Awakens was one of the most unoriginal-corpo money grab-self-aggrandizing movies I have ever seen. The plot was so bad it could have been written by a second-rate AI program written in sweatshop in India.

The worst part of this trilogy is how the beloved characters of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were treated. In no way would Han Solo have a emo-***** son. His son would be a space version of Huckleberry Finn.

Luke Skywalker (with Mark Hamill crushing it in acting) becomes an Emo ***** solely because of the aforementioned teen emo-***** that had no developed back story?

Anyway, only the Mandalorian brought me back...
