This article got me thinking: who is the biggest ****** in Hollywood?

https://www.yahoo.com/news/true-detective-actor-stephen-dorff-104421575.html

This Dorff guy would have given his left nut 10 years ago to be cast as Hawkeye or some other MCU lead and he's going to give Scarlett Johansson ***** Hell, he was even in a movie himself based on a Marvel comic (Blade).

I know he isn't real, but Johnny drama is such a doooosh bag it hurts. My vote goes to the many people in Hollywood that he is based on.

And I don't think the article focuses enough on the fact that a guy who starred "Blade" is giving someone **** about starring in a comic book movie.

That guy was a monster and a felon, not just an arrogant ******.

Dorff was really good in True Detective, but I've seen some of the straight to video movies he's been in that make Black Window look like Citizen Kane in comparison.

Not to totally derail but I met Tommy Lee Jones in a bookstore in San Antonio when I was like 14 and he was a total jerk. True story.

No kidding. And they are both Marvel movies and his was about a vampire.

He might be a little hypocritical here.

Woah woah woah. Slow your roll chief.

If you read what he said he remarked how this was a money grab film that isnt at all remarkable. Blade wasnt just a comic book film. Comic book films before Blade were godawful, like terribad supermans and nippleclad batmen. Blade is an action film with minimal CG effects that paved the way for the real start of well-funded comic book films franchises: Xmen.

To Dorff's point, they did what the industry said couldn't be done. Translate a minor superhero into a boxoffice win. The take was 3x the film's budget and they did it with a black superhero *gasp*. Sorry Chadwick, you werent the first successful black comic book film.

It was ground breaking work. Black widow is a participation trophy for Scarjo. And truthfully the only reason she got that role is people wanted to see her ass in the iconic leather suit.

People act like Donner Superman and Burton Batman weren't good AND successful. Sure, Batman Returns had backlash at the time, but it was still successful and rated highly.

It's like as soon as Batman Forever and Superman III came out it's like they were the first superhero movies.

And Black Panther wasn't just a small time hit like Blade. The movie made $1.7 billion and resonated with a whole subset of the population more than Blade could ever wish.

I ran into Chuck Norris at Office Depot in College Station my freshman year. He gave me a wink and a nod that was basically saying, "yeah, I'm Chuck Norris".

Not ******, but totally awesome

Superman and Batman may be the most recognizable AMERICAN characters other than maybe Snoopy and Mickey. I'm not arguing whether or not they made money, bc you could make a terrible batman film and pay Arnold $20mil for 8 mins of screentime and still end up in the black. Try doing that with Moon Knight.

Let's put this in perspective B&R netted, at best, $80m (maybe less because there are conflicting accounts of how expensive it was.) Blade netted $86m. A comic book hero the normies in society have never heard of vs one of biggest brand names in american fiction.

To Dorffs point, it was a gamble. It could have ended up like a number of other 90s hero films that flopped. Yet it succeeded.

It's funny this is getting brought up since I came across this movie again a few days ago for the first time in decades. I remember watching it a few times as a kid because it was being played repeatedly on tv. I'm sure it's god awful, but I feel like I need to watch it to see what I think of it after all these years.

Heres a fun question, if Black Panther came out in 1998 but had the same budget as blade, would it have been as successful as Blade?

Everyone knows the answer. BP benefitted from the strength of a dozen MCU films before it. BP benefitted from having a built in audience, an established universe, and hungry fans that already saw BP in Civil War. Aman Ra films vs. DISNEY STUDIO.

I think it would have done better, honestly.

I do want to add that I'm not really a fan of BP, but I think if you had an actor at that time who was as good as Boseman in the role, along with the other strong actors like in the current iteration, it would have been more successful than Blade.

And this is what I was referring to, not the part about Blade being a nobody having a successful movie.
