Saw it mentioned in some other threads, but it needs its own thread.

Brilliant. Writing, acting, story, music, etc, etc, etc.

Must watch

I read in an in-flight magazine that the lead actress learned ASL and finger-spelling for the role over the course of a year. She now gets to use it to communicate with fans who are hearing impaired. Really cool movie.

The only note is have is the title. In music, a vida is an extra section to end a piece. Yes, this is an end of her family dynamic, but it's also a new beginning for everyone.

I'd suggest Tacet. Which is a term for silence.

My aunt and uncle are both Deaf, and my cousins are true CODAs. They said that it was a great movie and very true to life. All of the deaf actors in the film are also deaf in real life. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I look forward to it.

Finally watched this. Holy hell I LOVED this movie.

The first half is just entertaining, with the parents being hilarious. The second half I was a mess. I thought it was brilliant when they cut the sound just as her duet is taking off. Heartbreaking being in the parents shoes. And just when my tears dried she sings to her dad, and then the Berklee audition!!! Man!

Also when the dad finally speaks and tells her to "Go", and she waves the I Love You sign out the window. My mom and I have done that wave since forever.

Overall I just fell head over heels for this movie.

I am very glad to see it's being nominated for Best Picture at all the big ones so far (Golden Globe, AFI, Critics Choice) and the dad has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I really wish/hope that the daughter gets a Best Actress nomination. I thought she was spectacular.

Huge thumbs up!

Watched it this weekend due to the awards buzz it had been getting, and was completely blown away. The 2nd half of the film has some of the most powerful scenes I have ever witnessed. It just goes to show you that you don't need to reinvent the wheel or have some gimmick to make an exceptional movie. You simply need to execute really well.

The actor who plays the father deserves a statue, IMO. ****ing outstanding performance.

Saw CODA last night on Apple+. Absolutely loved it. A deaf family with CODAs rents a place next to ours at the beach every summer and this movie resonates so much of their interactions. We actually learned a bit of ASL so we could communicate better with them. I need to renew what I learned every year before we go on vacation.
Some schools offer ASL as a language requirement. Wish I had that opportunity.

Anyway, too many messages in this movie - not all related to hearing.

PS. I love Marlee Matlin

So glad to see this thread. Watched it over the weekend. One of the better movies I've seen in the last few years. Great performances by the entire cast. Especially liked the teacher. And the young girl was amazing. My wife said she'd never sung before this role. Marlee Matlin is still beautiful. This needs to win some awards. I highly recommend this movie.

CODA is currently the front-runner to win Best Picture. It's neck-and-neck between it and The Power of the Dog, with CODA having gained the momentum the past couple of weeks. And the dad is basically a lock now to win Best Supporting Actor.

I finally watched it for the first time a couple nights ago, and to be honest, about halfway through I was thinking, "THIS is what's going to win Best Picture?" It just felt a little too after-school-special and not quite "prestige" enough, if that makes sense. Cut to: half an hour later and I was practically sobbing. Granted, I was also on pain meds from having pulled my back earlier in the day, but either way, by the end, I *totally* got the hype. Such a great movie.

Spider-Man was the world's favorite movie of 2021 and it wasn't close.

I've gotten so sick of all the front-runners for the last few years being movies that like 8 people have seen.

I'll eventually watch Power of the Dog just cause it's on Netflix, but based on everything I've heard I'm not in any hurry to watch it.

And still have no plans of getting Apple TV+, so no Coda for me. But I miss the days of having a big huge blockbuster get some awards recognition, like a Titanic or a LOTR.

Hell even Dune would be awesome to see win.

I guess the one thing I'm looking forward to is Will Smith finally getting his first Oscar.

I have a high tolerance, give nearly every movie a shot, love Oscar season, etc, and even I turned off The Power of the Dog after half an hour. It was absolutely mind-numbing, IMO. So I totally get the annoyance when the super depressing, super arthouse stuff wins that, relatively speaking, not a ton of people have seen. That said, CODA is a fantastic, feel-good crowd-pleaser, and has been "free" on Apple TV+ since August. In fact, it's becoming one of their most-watched movies, and absolutely deserves the praise it's receiving. It's such a unique movie, with such a unique cast, that I'm totally fine with it winning over something like Dune, which I'm obviously a massive fan of as well.

Couldn't agree more on power of the dog. Sheesh what a train wreck that was. I might have made it 45 minutes tops

Wow. Finally got a chance to see this and so glad I did. Very happy this won best picture. I think my favorite part of the whole movie was how she explained to her teacher how singing made her feel. Such a great little moment

Late to the party on this one, will watch it tomorrow night (tonight is Aggie Basketball!). And same on Power of the Dog, a very forgettable movie to even be considered for Best Movie. There was good acting, albeit they seem like caricature's of themselves, but the story was crap.

In my book, the Best "Best Picture" winner since "The King's Speech"

Wife and I finally watched it, don't know what took us so long. Such a great movie. And ever since having kids/daughters anything with a touching father-daughter story absolutely shreds me, as the last 30 mins of this did.
