I actually had plans with friends to see him that fall.

Will always be sad it never happened.

I was actually trying to go to that Alpine Valley show but my sister didn't want to sit in the lawn which were the only tickets left when I tried to get them. The kid at the music store told me the wrong on-sale date. Still haunts me to this day.

Posted this article last year. Apparently the guy who did this was also on a podcast with Mike Rhyner of Ticket fame.

Fortunately I was able to see him twice which was not enough.

How popular and well known was he (outside of blues/hardcore music circles) before he died?

I was in middle school so really had no clue about him before the crash. I know by my teen years it became a cliche for KLOL to play Texas Flood every time there was a good rain.

Not very well known, especially outside of Texas. I feel like Pride and Joy and Crossfire were more recognizable by many people for being played on a few local commercials, but most couldn't tell you who sung the songs.

Yeah, I'd agree. Stevie had gotten a lot of props for his playing on Bowie's "Let's Dance" project in 1983 and he was just getting the widespread credit he deserved.
