I have been meaning to watch this for years. It is on HBO Max. All I have to say is wow. To think it was made 80 years ago is crazy. If you haven't taken the time to watch it, you should.

I have made the point in other threads.
But almost any movie you watch as at least part of its genesis in that movie. The number of innovations for its time were remarkable - the split timelines,, the aging of the actors, the amazing ending etc.
It rewrote movie story telling.

First time I saw it was for a class. IIRC, it was an English course called Language in Film.
Now it's a stop down for me if I stumble across it.

I'll beat the drum with you. I am not a movie expert at all when it comes to cameras/lighting/all that jazz. But watching it I told my wife I would not believe it was made when it was. Everything was impeccable.
I heard the 2001: A Space Odyssey hype and really enjoyed it but this honestly hugely surpassed my expectations. It may be a product of our current climate with the intersection of media and politics but that seems to be an even stronger testament for the film.

It's pretty incredible to see what they pulled off for the time. Great story, but it's an absolute technical marvel.
Except for having the worlds largest plot hole yes it is a cinematic masterpiece

It's a non-existent plot hole. The nurse enters the room after he says "Rosebud", so the supposed plot hole is how did she know he said it. It's later stated in the film that his butler was with him when he died even if he wasn't shown in frame.Sex Panther said:

Is there a good comparison movie to get context of what the best of the day was?

It is good (great even) for what it is, but in some aspects it reminds me of a Terrence Malick film. Beautiful impressive film making for the sake of making impressive beautiful films.
I was bored to tears when I first watched it.
I'm not a movie/film wonk so I fully admit I didn't appreciate all of the innovations that Wells originated for it but it was a slog for me.
